SAN ANTONIO – No. 14 Trinity University Women's Tennis added two to the win column Sunday, taking down No. 37 University of Texas-Dallas, 8-1, after sweeping Austin College for its third Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win of 2023.
The Tigers (11-4, 3-0 SCAC) threw up all shutouts in the morning's conference matchup with the Kangaroos (2-9, 1-3 SCAC) finishing the match in line order in just over 90 minutes at the Al G. Hill, Jr. Tennis Stadium.
The afternoon, predictably, offered a fight though the message was not relayed to line-two duo junior
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and first-year
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) as they marked the first point of the match with the No. 37 Comets (8-6) on an 8-2 tally.
After ceding what would be UT-Dallas's lone point, sophomores
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) rallied from a late deficit for a dogfight tiebreaker, 16-14, that foreshadowed what was to come for Hill later in the match.
The Tigers sweep their way through singles with five lines offering straight-sets outputs. Within moments of each other Levy, Cushing and Kim all wrapped up to clinch the match, followed by tallies of 6-1, 6-2 and 6-1, 6-3 for juniors
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and
Ella Cummings (Albuquerque, N.M. / Sandia), respectively, in the fifth and sixth lines.
As things came to a close, Hill remained in a battle with reigning Intercollegiate Tennis Association Southwest Regional Champion Suzuka Nishino despite holding a 4-1 second-set lead and a 6-1 first-set victory in hand. Nishino gutted out a 7-5 match-leveler to force a superbreaker. Down 4-2 early on in the tiebreak set, Hill mustered the strength to overcome Nishino for a 10-7 victory, scoring the final three points.
No. 14 Trinity Women's Tennis will face two more nationally ranked teams on the road over the next two Fridays, visiting No. 23 Southwestern University (April 7) and No. 19 Washington University in St. Louis (April 14). The April 7 visit to Georgetown, Texas will be a site visit of sorts as the Pirates will host the 2023 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference Tennis Championships April 28-30.
