SAN ANTONIO – The 14th-ranked Tiger baseball team suffered a 15-3 non-conference loss at home against the University of Texas-Dallas on Tuesday night.
Trinity fell to 8-5 with the defeat, which snapped the team's three-game winning streak. The Tigers came into the game having won seven of their last eight games, but UT-Dallas was able to improve to 7-5 with the win after producing its second-best scoring total of the season.
The scoring actually began with Trinity picking up a run in the bottom of the first to take the early lead, but that was short-lived as the Comets brought in four runs in the second and never looked back. The Tigers had three hits in the first inning, starting with an infield hit off the bat of
Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North). After a stolen base and another hit moved Gore up to third, he came around to score on a single up the middle by
Kai Tinker (Simi Valley, Calif. / Grace Brethren).
UT-Dallas added three more runs in the fourth to take a 7-1 lead,
Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) drove in Tinker with a ground-rule double to score another run. The Comets answered the Tiger score with four more runs in the fifth to take an 11-2 advantage halfway through the game.
Trea Verver (Cedar Park, Texas / Cedar Park) walked and came around to score on a wild pitch in the Trinity half of the sixth inning, but UT-Dallas picked up two more runs in the seventh to pull in front 13-3. The Comets closed out their final offensive inning with two more runs to account for the final score.
Jack Schmitt (St. Louis, Mo. / Lafayette) took the loss and fell to 0-1 this season, allowing four runs on four hits before leaving the game in the second inning. Six Tiger relievers came into the game and only one escaped his outing without allowing a run.
Trinity strung together nine hits in the game, but managed just three runs. Harris was the only player with more than one hit, going 2-for-2 at the plate with the fourth-inning RBI double.
The Tigers will have a quick turnaround to try and bounce back from tonight's loss, hosting DeSales University (Pa.) tomorrow at 6:00 p.m. Trinity will then have the weekend off before returning for a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference series at home against Austin College, beginning on Friday, March 17.
