ST. LOUIS – The 14th-ranked Trinity women's tennis team won its fourth consecutive match by defeating No. 19 Washington University-St. Louis 5-4 on Friday.
The Tigers improved to 12-4 with the win, while Wash U. dropped to 10-8 on the season. Trinity has won three straight matchups with the Bears, giving the Tigers a slight 4-3 edge since 2011 in the series. Including today's result, five of the seven matches have been decided by just a single point.
Trinity took a 2-1 lead after doubles play as the top-line team of
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) finished doubles with an 8-6 win.
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) opened with an 8-4 win to put the Tigers up 1-0 before Wash U tied things up by winning 8-5 at line three over
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) and
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift).
Despite falling behind at the end of doubles, the Bears had the momentum early in singles play. Wash U won at lines five and two to take its first lead at 3-2. Levy scored a 6-3, 6-3 win at line three to tie the match again, but the Bears were unfazed and regained the lead with a win at line six.
Facing a 4-3 deficit, Trinity was left with Cushing at line four and Hill at line one still on the court. Cushing battled out a 7-5, 6-4 win to make it 4-4 overall, then Hill got the clincher with a 7-6, 6-4 win to send the Tigers to victory.
