GEORGETOWN, Texas – No. 16 Trinity University Women's Tennis took down No. 20 Southwestern Friday afternoon, giving them a combination of a nationally ranked win and fourth conference victory all in one match.
The Tigers (13-4; 4-0 SCAC) started their afternoon with a 2-1 lead over the Pirates through doubles play.
Sophomore
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Ariz. / Notre Dame Prep) and junior
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandergrift) posted the first win of the day from line three with their score of 8-6.
When the consistent line one pairing of sophomores
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) fell just short of making a doubles sweep possible, the duo of junior
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas) and first-year
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) stepped up with a mark of 8-7, giving Trinity the edge going into singles play.
The Tigers went on to quickly take command of the singles lines, winning five of the six possible points for a final overall score of 7-2.
Two points were quickly tacked on in straight-set wins from Cushing (6-3, 6-3) and Hughes (6-3, 6-4), allowing Kim to clinch the match for Trinity in her 6-1, 7-6 win over the region's No. 24 player.
Levy matched her doubles partner with a straight-set winning score of 6-3, 6-3 from line three. Hill closed out the match for the Tigers, finalizing their 7-2 victory with a mark of 6-4, 7-6.
