SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity baseball team opened a three-game Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend series with a 10-0 shutout victory against Schreiner University on Friday night.
The Tigers snapped their three-game losing streak with the win, which improved their overall record to 21-13 this season. Schreiner fell to 15-19 with the loss, while also dropping to 4-12 in conference play. Trinity holds a 12-4 SCAC record and is second in the standings by a half-game over Texas Lutheran University.
Senior pitcher
Cade McGahan (Davidson, N.C. / Hough) tossed a complete-game, two-hit shutout over the seven-inning outing, and struck out six batters. McGahan (4-1) pitched his first career complete game on a night in which he changed jerseys to wear No. 7 and honor a friend who passed away recently.
"I dedicated that game to Joseph and his family and am so grateful that I could do something small to honor his memory," said McGahan. "I definitely feel like he was with me tonight and I was extremely grateful to honor him as best I could."
The usual No. 7 on the roster,
Jack Baker (Sugar Land, Texas / Ridge Point), went 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to lead the offense while wearing McGahan's No. 31 jersey. Baker was batting second in the lineup and hit a solo home run in the bottom of the first for the first runs of the game.
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) and
Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) both went 2-for-3 as well and Peterson matched Baker with two runs scored. Holloway added a run scored and one RBI.
Ezra Gore (Dallas, Texas / McKinney North) was 1-for-2 with a run and an RBI, drawing three walks to reach base four times in five plate appearances.
Trinity and Schreiner will finish off the weekend's action with a Saturday afternoon doubleheader that begins at 1:00 p.m. Saturday will also be Senior Day as seven Tiger Seniors will be honored prior to the games.
The Rundown
After Baker's solo shot opened up the scoring in the first, Trinity added another run in the third on an RBI double from
Tyler Pettit (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock). Pettit's run-scoring hit was set up by Baker's one-out single, and the Tigers led 2-0 after three innings.
McGahan retired the first six batters he faced before allowing a single to open the third. He didn't allow another hit until the fifth, though that batter was thrown out trying to stretch the hit to a double.
Trinity blew the game open with five runs in the fifth inning, collecting four walks and two hits while also taking advantage of two Schreiner errors to make it a 7-0 lead. Peterson had a bunt single to third base that ended up scoring
Korson Hastings (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill), who opened the inning with a leadoff walk. Holloway also walked and scored on a wild pitch after the Peterson hit. Gore beat out a bunt between the mound and first base for another bunt-single that drove in Peterson.
Ty Preston (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) slashed a deep fly ball to left field to drive in
Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian), and the ensuing error also brought Gore in for the final run of the inning.
Baker lined out to left-center to score another run in the fifth to make it 8-0, then the Tigers scored two more times in the sixth to set up the run-rule. Hastings and Holloway had back-to-back RBI singles to drive in the runs in the sixth, scoring Preston and
Austin Davison (Park City, Utah / Rowland Hall).
McGahan put the finishing touches on the game by retiring the last six batters he faced. He allowed a leadoff walk in the sixth, then struck out the next two hitters and got a comebacker to finish the inning. He retired the final three batters in the seventh to secure the shutout victory.
