SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger softball team opened up its final home series of the regular season with a 3-0 shutout win over the University of Dallas on Friday night.
Trinity improved to 8-26 overall and 5-10 in SCAC, snapping a five-game losing streak with the win. Dallas dropped to 5-25 overall and 0-16 in conference with its 15th consecutive loss.
First-year
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) recorded her first shutout of the season, allowing just one hit, and striking out a career-best six hitters.
Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) went 2-for-3 with two RBI in the game to account for two of Trinity's three runs scored, as well as two of the team's five total hits.
The two teams will close out the weekend series with a doubleheader on Saturday at 12:00 p.m. Trinity's seniors will be honored between games.
The Rundown
Arce picked up four of her six strikeouts in the first two innings, and after allowing a hit to the second hitter of the game, she held Dallas hitless the rest of the way.
Trinity's offense stranded runners in the first and second innings before finally breaking up the shutout in the third.
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) reached on an error with one out in the inning, then promptly stole second base for the second time in the game.
Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) promptly drove in Del Toro with a single to center to put Trinity up 1-0.
Sydney Watson (San Antonio, Texas / San Antonio Christian) came in to pinch-run for Dabboussi, who had moved to second on the throw home. Delaluna then picked up her first RBI of the night to score Watson for a 2-0 Trinity lead.
The Tigers were set up for a big fifth inning, beginning with two walks surrounding another error to load the bases with no outs. Delaluna dropped a single into left to score pinch-runner
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, Calif. / Freedom). Dallas picked up the first out with a throw home on a fielder's choice, then finished the inning with a double play.
Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter) was robbed of a hit on her line drive up the middle, as the second baseman was playing in for a play at the plate. She snagged the line drive and then dove to the bag at second to beat the runner, ending the inning after just one run and a 3-0 lead.
Another double play derailed the offense in the sixth, but it didn't matter for Arce as she retired Schreiner in order to close out the game. Arce picked up her final strikeout on the last batter of the game.
