SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger softball team finished off a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend sweep by taking both games of Saturday's doubleheader against the University of Dallas.
Trinity improved to 10-26 overall and 7-10 in SCAC play, winning 10-2 and 9-0 in two run-rule games to finish off the weekend. The Crusaders have now lost 17 consecutive games and are just 5-27 overall and 0-18 in conference this season.
It was an extremely special Senior Day for Tigers
Madison Horn (Schertz, Texas / Clemens),
Christina Garcia (San Ramon, Calif. / Dougherty Valley), and
Emery Boettcher (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg), who were honored between games on the last regular season home weekend of their careers.
Horn started both games at second base and scored three runs on the day, while Garcia finished 3-for-4 with three runs scored and one RBI. Boettcher got the complete-game victory in the circle for game one, pitching five innings and recording four strikeouts. Boettcher also pinch-hit in the bottom of the fifth, driving in the game-ending run to enact the run rule.
Jessie Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) went 2-for-3 in both games and drove in five total runs. She had two doubles and four RBI in the second game alone, scoring twice to account for four of Trinity's nine runs.
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) was a perfect 5-for-5 at the plate, scoring three runs total in the two games. She had three hits and two runs scored in the opener, then had two hits and another score in the second.
Diamond Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens) went 2-for-2 with a double and three RBI in game one, while
Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) had two hits and two RBI in the opener.
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) finished with two RBI in the first game and two hits in the second, while
Lanie Smith (Foxfield, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) had a double among her two hits in game two.
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) allowed just one hit over 4.0 innings, striking out four batters and earned the win. Arce combined with Smith in the one-hit shutout, with Smith retiring three straight batters to close out the game.
Trinity will travel to Sherman, Texas, next weekend to face off against Austin College in the final regular season home games of the 2023 season. The Tigers will be back at home for the SCAC Tournament, though, which will be held May 5-7.
The Rundown, Game 1
Boettcher held Dallas hitless over the first two innings and Trinity got on the board in a big way in the bottom of the second to take the lead. The Tigers scored four runs on four hits, beginning with Lee's leadoff single up the middle. After a sacrifice and another single, Miller stole second to put runners at second and third with just one out. Elizondo powered a double into the gap in right-center to score both runs and give Trinity the 2-0 lead. Lloyd drove in Elizondo with a sac fly two batters later, then Del Toro drove in Horn with an RBI single to finish off the prolific inning.
Dallas got its first hit of the day against Boettcher to lead off the third and ended up getting a run in the inning as well to make it 4-1. A determined Trinity offense kept the pressure on with three more runs in the bottom half to widen the lead to 7-1. The Tigers loaded the bases with no outs, which led to a two-run double by Miller. Elizondo then found a hole on the left side of the infield for another RBI to finish off the scoring. Dallas escaped further damage with a double play and a fly out to right to keep it to just a three-run inning.
A leadoff walk to start the fourth led to the second run of the game for Dallas, which was scored after a wild pitch and two ground balls on the infield to make it a 7-2 game.
Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) singled with one out to jump-start the offense in the bottom of the inning, then scored on a single to right by
Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter).
Boettcher had a 1-2-3 fifth to maintain Trinity's lead going into the bottom of the fifth, which eventually set her up for the game-ending hit. Garcia singled to lead off the inning, then Horn sacrificed her to second. Del Toro drove in Garcia on a fielder's choice, then Boettcher was called on to pinch-hit. On the first pitch she saw, she delivered a hit up the middle to score Horn, involving all three seniors in the final inning of the game one win.
The Rundown, Game 2
Trinity got the scoring started in the first inning of game two, taking advantage of an error to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice, a strikeout, and a walk, Smith delivered an RBI single down the right field line to put the Tigers up 1-0.
The only hit of the game against Arce and Smith came on the second batter of the game. Dallas stranded two runners in the second after Arce pitched around a pair of walks. Garcia singled and stole second to start the second inning, then scored on Lloyd's first double of the game to make it 2-0. After Del Toro singled and stole second, Dabboussi doubled home two more runs to extend the lead to 4-0 after two innings.
After the two walks in the second, Arce retired seven straight batters to finish off her outing, including 1-2-3 innings in both the third and fourth. Trinity added its final five runs in the third inning, which began with Smith's double to deep left-center. Lee smashed an infield single up the middle, then intentionally got caught in a rundown in order to allow the runner at third to score and make it 5-0. Garcia followed a walk to Williams with an RBI double, then Horn walked to load the bases with no outs. Lloyd cleared the bases as quickly as they were loaded with a double down the right field line to finish off the scoring.
After neither team scored in the fourth, Smith relieved Arce in the fifth and promptly finished off a 1-2-3 fifth on just nine total pitches.
