Trinity Softball Sweeps SCAC DH at Austin College

SHERMAN, Texas – The Tiger softball team opened up a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend by sweeping a doubleheader at Austin College on Saturday afternoon, winning 4-2 and 12-3.

Trinity improved its overall record to 12-26 this season, which includes a 9-10 mark in conference play. The Tigers have won five consecutive games, as the latest two victories drop Austin College to 7-30 overall and 3-17 in SCAC.

Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, Calif. / Thousand Oaks) improved to 4-8 on the season after earning the complete-game victory in game one. Arce allowed just two runs on five hits over seven innings, striking out nine batters. The nine strikeouts is the most for a Tiger pitcher since 2021. Emery Boettcher (Fredericksburg, Texas / Fredericksburg) snagged the win in game two, giving up two runs on six hits over 5.1 innings, while Lanie Smith (Foxfield, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) finished off the final 1.2 innings in relief.

Three Tiger players had multi-hit games in both ends of today's doubleheader. Diamond Elizondo (San Antonio, Texas / Stevens) went 4-for-5 on the day with two runs scored and two RBI. She had a homer and a triple among her four hits. Dawson Dabboussi (Dallas, Texas / Highland Park) was 2-for-4 in each game and collected a double and a triple. Jessie Lloyd (Rancho Santa Margarita, Calif. / Trabuco Hills) collected four singles in the two games and went 4-for-7 overall.

Abigail Miller (Winnetka, Calif. / El Camino Real) finished the second game going 3-for-4 with three RBI and two runs scored, while Marina Delaluna (Concord, Calif. / Concord) matched her teammate with three RBI of her own. Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) and Jordyn Williams (Clayton, Calif. / Valley Charter) both had two hits and two runs scored in the finale.

The Rundown: Game 1
Trinity stranded runners in each of the first two innings before finally breaking through with a couple of runs in the top of the third. Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) walked and stole second to start off the inning, then moved to third on an infield hit by Delaluna. After Delaluna also stole second, Dabboussi delivered her second hit of the game to make it a 1-0 lead for the Tigers. Smith then hit a sac fly to center to score Delaluna and give Trinity a two-run cushion.

That lead didn't last long, though, as Austin College answered immediately with two runs in the bottom of the inning. A walk, a hit batter, and two hits against Arce led to a 2-2 tie after three innings.

The Tigers immediately regained the lead as Elizondo hit a leadoff homer to left-center field in the top of the fourth inning. Trinity got a couple of hits after that, but a double play ended the inning and kept it to a 3-2 lead for the Tigers.

After getting two outs on just three pitches in the top of the fifth, Lee laced a double to spark a two-out rally. Williams dropped in a hit down the left field line to score Lee and make it a 4-2 game. Arce gave up a double in the fifth and a walk in the sixth, but never really got into trouble again and Trinity picked up the win.

The Rundown: Game 2
The Tigers got started right away in the second game, stringing together three hits in the first four batters to score two runs. Lloyd singled to start off the inning then moved to second on a comebacker by Del Toro. Dabboussi put runners on the corners with her single, then Elizondo knocked in both with a triple down the line in right field.

Boettcher retired the 'Roos in order in the first and Trinity kept up the scoring with two more runs in the second to take a 4-0 lead. Williams got things started with a leadoff single, then Miller and Elizondo followed with two more hits to load the bases. Angela Baltzell (Antioch, Calif. / Freedom) had an infield single to score Williams, then Lloyd lined out to third for the first out of the inning. Del Toro then hit into a double play to end the inning, though Miller scored before the end of the play and Trinity took a four-run lead after just two innings.

Austin had runners on base against Boettcher in each of the next four innings, but she kept the home team scoreless in each. In the sixth, Trinity added on three more insurance runs to take a 7-0 lead. Lee opened with a triple on the first pitch, then Miller doubled home the first run two batters later. Elizondo knocked in another with a triple, then later stole home for the third score of the inning.
A one out walk in the bottom of the sixth led to a two-run homer for Austin College, which broke up the shutout and chased Boettcher from the game. Smith came in and got two of the first three hitters she faced to minimize the damage.

Trinity's offense ensured that any comeback would be nearly impossible by scoring five more runs in the top of the seventh to take a 12-2 lead. Dabboussi's leadoff triple led to an RBI for Delaluna, then Lee and Williams had back-to-back hits to load the bases. Miller's third hit of the game drove in a pair of runners, then a wild pitch put runners at second and third for pinch-hitter Zoe Frausto (Katy, Texas / Morton Ranch). Frausto made it 11-2 with her single through the left side of the infield, then Peyton Bowser (Arvada, Colo. / West) finished off the scoring with a sac fly to center and a 10-run lead. Austin picked up a run in the bottom of the inning, but it was nowhere near enough as Trinity completed the Saturday sweep.
