NICHOLASVILLE, Ky. – Trinity's men's golf team moved up to 12th place after the third of four rounds at the NCAA III Championships on Thursday, turning in its third straight day with a team score under 300.
The Tigers finished with a score of 298 (+10) in the third round, which was one stroke better than yesterday's finish that kept them in the top 18 and eligible to compete on the final two days of the tournament. Methodist University is leading by four shots over Piedmont University. Trinity is just two shots out of the top 10 with Illinois Wesleyan University and Washington & Lee University currently in 10th and 11th.
Jacob Mason (Westminster, Colo. / Holy Family) shot even-par for the second time in three rounds, but needed six birdies on the day to remain at 72. He is currently tied for 11th place individually with a total score of 217 (72-73-72). The Tigers started on the back nine today and Mason began his round with four of his six birdies in the first nine holes and he played the back at -1. He is tied for third among all participants with 13 birdies over the first three rounds. Mason is just six shots off the leader heading into the final round, and there are only eight players shooting under par for the tournament.
Neel Sandhu (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) turned in his best score of the tournament, shooting 73 (+1) on Thursday. He finished his day with two birdies on the front nine (his back nine for the day) and has a three-day total of 224 (75-76-73).
Carter Code (Calgary, Alberta, Canada / Manning) shot 76 for the second straight day and is tied with Sandhu with a 224 (72-76-76) over three rounds. Code had two of his three birdies on holes 1-9 and played even-par over that stretch.
Daniel Nunez (Los Angeles, Calif. / Loyola) and
Giorgio Gianoulis (Salt Lake City, Utah / Rowland Hall) had just two birdies each on the day. Nunez shot 77 and is second on the team for the tournament with a score of 222 (71-74-77). Gianoulis had both of his birdies on the back nine (his front), finishing with a 79 on Thursday to give him a total of 242 (77-86-79) for the tournament.
The final day of action puts the Tigers back on hole 10 to start, and Trinity's five golfers will begin at 8:00 a.m. (ET) on Friday morning. Trinity will be playing with Washington & Lee and Illinois Wesleyan in the final round of play.
