SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity men's soccer team finished off another unbeaten weekend at home with a 3-1 victory over Whitman College (WA) on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (4-0-0) scored three unanswered goals in the second half after falling behind 1-0 midway through the first period. Whitman (0-3-1) suffered its second straight loss after opening its road trip in Texas with a 1-1 draw on Thursday. The Blues also lost 2-1 to Southwestern University on Friday night.
Whitman scored the initial goal in the 21st minute, cutting off an attack by Trinity just outside the box, and mounting a quick counter that went nearly the entire length of the field. That put the Tigers down a goal with 20+ minutes left in the half. Trinity out-shot Whitman 9-3 after that goal, but the Blues were still in front at the break.
Less than four minutes into the second half, Trinity tied things up with a corner-kick goal.
Chen Adjei (Euless, Texas / Trinity) was driving towards goal down the right side of the field when Whitman was forced to kick it out for a corner.
Hunter Cain (Katy, Texas / Cinco Ranch) played it short to
Will Powell (Bexley, England / Beth Grammar School), who sent in a cross between two crashing defenders. His pass was just out of the reach of two Tigers in the box, but
Pieter Blank (The Hague, The Netherlands / Dalton Voorburg) was there at the far post to fire in the equalizer.
Trinity had three more shots in the next three minutes, including a point-blank shot from Adjei that sailed high. In the 54th minute, Trinity drew a penalty and converted for the lead. After Whitman cut off a pass and began its counterattack, Blank hustled back near midfield to reclaim possession. Cain eluded four defenders as he made his way into the box and the final Whitman player went for a hard tackle just inside the line to draw the foul. Cain then converted the PK for the eventual game-winner.
As the clock ticked towards the eight-minute mark, Trinity found another scoring chance. The Tigers played in a through ball to
Michael Meese (Williamsburg, Va. / Jamestown) in the middle of the box, but Whitman's defense got there first and pushed the ball back out to the left. Instead of getting clear, the ball found the feet of
Cameron Smith (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands / Cayman Prep). Smith made a quick move to get around his defender, then sent the ball back into the middle for Meese, who knocked it in from about three yards out to put the game out of reach.
