SAN ANTONIO – The ninth-ranked Tiger women's soccer team finished off a successful home opener with a 1-0 win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (CA) on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity evened its record at 2-2-0 this season, earning a split for the weekend. Claremont falls to 1-2-1 this year, ending its road trip to Texas without scoring a goal after tying Southwestern University (TX) on Friday night. The Tigers have now won two straight games against Claremont and both have come under Head Coach
Dylan Harrison. Trinity also won a 2-1 game at home over Claremont in 2016.
The Tigers doubled up the Athenas in first-half shooting (6-3), but had a decisive 11-1 advantage in the second half of play.
Claremont got the first scoring chance of the day in the 12th minute of play after earning a corner kick. The attempt was cleared cut off by Trinity, but Claremont maintained possession and got off a clean shot from just beyond the 18-yard box. The shot was saved, though, and bounced off the post to keep the game scoreless.
Less than three minutes later, Trinity would score what turned out to be the only goal of the game. The Tigers pushed forward down the left side with a long pass to
Abby Schneider (Albuquerque, N.M. / Bosque School). As she tried to cut back towards the middle of the field, the Claremont defender poked the ball away with a sliding tackle. The loose ball fell right to the feet of
Kyra Stafford (Albuquerque, N.M. / Hope Christian), who charged into the box before lacing a cross to the far post. There it was redirected out of the air by
Emily Hayes (Allen, Texas / Allen), beating the keeper to the ball and finding the back of the net.
Trinity goalkeeper
Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview) preserved her first shutout of the young season with a pair of saves, including a stop with just under eight minutes to go. Claremont drew a foul in front of the goal, but just outside the box. The ensuing free kick was whipped in around the wall, but Lewis was there for the save to keep the Tigers in front.

Trinity will be back on the road next weekend, taking on a pair of in-state opponents. The Tigers face Hardin-Simmons University at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, September 15, in Abilene; then will take on the University of Texas-Dallas in Richardson next Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
