Box Score GEORGETOWN - No. 11 Tiger Volleyball finished up the final match of their Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) opening weekend with a 3-1 victory over the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs.
The Tigers (11-3) offense would come up big in this match, with three Tigers securing ten or more kills. Senior
Mackenzie Logan (Calgary, Canada / Bishop Carroll) would lead the way with 17 kills.
Maddie Fate (Croton on Hudson, New York / Croton Harmon) and
Reagan Whatley (The Woodlands, Texas / The Woodlands) would take some great swings, collecting 13 kills each. It would be another career day for fifth-year
Nadia Kern (El Paso, Texas / Montwood), as she set a career-high in digs with 37 and
Brette Thornton (Rockwall, Texas / Rockwall) would lead the Tigers with 6 blocks.
The Rundown
The Tigers would jump out to an early 2-0 lead and then would go on to extend it to a 5-2 lead off of the arm of
Mackenzie Logan. However, the Bulldogs would quickly close the game and tie the game up at 7. The Tigers would put great swings on the ball and collected multiple kills on their way to a 17-13 lead. The Bulldogs would fight all the way back and scored the final three points of the set to win it 22-25.
The Tigers would take the first-set loss to heart and pour it on in the second set. The second set would start with Logan doing what she does best, putting balls on the floor. Just when the Bulldogs finally took a breath and saw the scoreboard read 11-9, the Tigers put the pedal to the metal. The arms of
Maddie Fate and
Courtney Pope (New Braunfels, Texas / Canyon) would carry the team to a comfortable 20-12 lead. The Tigers would not be content with comfort, though, they were ready to take the set. A huge block by
Brette Thornton and Logan would set up the Tigers for set point. As the ball came over, it would be Pope to slam the ball to the floor and let out a hyping yell to give the Tigers the set 25-15.
The third set would be more of the same, with
Mackenzie Logan setting up the Tigers with an early 6-3 lead. The block of the Tigers would not cause much of an issue for the Bulldogs this set, so the Tigers needed to step up offensively if they wanted to secure the set, and they did exactly that. The Tiger setters, led by fifth-year
Marisa Amarino (Calabasas, California / Notre Dame Prep) were excellent at spreading the love to the whole team so that Bulldog block couldn't cheat to one side. If they thought the middle was getting the ball, the ball would be set to the outside. Just when they thought the ball was going to be set to the outside, there goes the ball to the right side. Five different Tigers would record a kill in set four, led by the hitter duo of
Reagan Whatley and
Mackenzie Logan who had five kills apiece.
The Tigers were ready to cage the Bulldogs and head home. The scoring was started by a
Kathryn Detweiler (Goshen, Indiana / Goshen) kill. After some kills by Whatley, Thornton, and Logan got the Tigers to an 8-5 lead, the Bulldogs settled in. The Bulldogs came back and battled the Tigers for the lead until it was 14-14. Whatley would be a heavy hitter in this set for the Tigers, as she scored multiple points to bring the lead to the Tigers. When the scoreboard saw 22-19 and the match was in hand, the Bulldogs stormed back and brought the score to 23-21. Out of the break, it would be the Tiger veterans who would lead the way. The Bulldogs thought they could get the ball over easily, but then a set of hands from the other side of the net would put the ball to the floor for a Tiger point. To take the set and the match, the Tigers got the ball to their workhorse
Mackenzie Logan and she sent a fastball down the court to secure the Tiger win 25-22.
