CLAREMONT, CALIF. – The ninth-ranked Tiger women's soccer team was upset in a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Pomona-Pitzer Colleges (CA) on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity (1-1-0) opened the year with a convincing 6-1 win at the University of Redlands (CA), but was held to just seven total shots by the Sagehens in today's matchup. Pomona has been eliminated by Trinity in the NCAA III Playoffs each of the last two seasons, and today was the first win in the series for Pomona since the 1991 season.
The Tigers started the scoring early in the game, taking advantage of their second corner kick of the game in the 11th minute.
Michaela Bosco (Weatherford, Texas / Weatherford) lofted the attempt to the far post and after a failed clearance by Pomona,
Bailey Meyer (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) found the ball at her feet. She immediately passed it back to
Emma Everts (Parker, Colo. / Ponderosa) who was running in toward goal, and Everts buried it for a 1-0 lead.
Not even a minute later, Pomona answered with a goal of its own to make it a tie game once again. The Sagehens attacked down the right side of the field right after the kickoff, and then chipped it in from just inside the top right corner of the box. Pomona then scored what wound up being the game-winner less than 15 minutes later, giving the home team a 2-1 lead in the 27th minute. Trinity did not have an on-target shot the rest of the half, though Pomona had a pair that could have upped the lead even more.
Trinity had a couple of chances early as
Josephine McCray (Fairway, Kan. / Shawnee Mission East) and
Abby Schneider (Albuquerque, N.M. / Bosque School) both produced shots on goal in the first 10 minutes of the second half. The Tigers had plenty of possession in the second half, but ultimately couldn't finish. Trinity keeper
Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview) made three saves in the final 20 minutes of the game to keep the match within reach, and finished with a career-high six saves overall.
Pomona held Trinity to just the seven shots overall in the game and the last shot of the game for the Tigers came in the early second half from Schneider. The Sagehens finished with 16 total shots and eight of those were on goal.
