SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity women's basketball team completed a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend home sweep by defeating Centenary College (LA) 88-60 on Saturday night.
The Tigers upped their record to 12-5 overall and 7-1 in the SCAC, while the Ladies fell to 1-15 overall and remain winless at 0-8 in conference play. Trinity has won each of the 22 meetings all-time between the two teams.
Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Ore. / Valley Catholic) tied Trinity's single-game record with seven three-pointers in the game, marking the second time she has tied the record. She finished with 27 total points, connecting on 8-of-10 from the floor and 7-of-8 from three-point range. Napoli also swiped a pair of steals and handed out three assists.
Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) had another outstanding all-around game with 16 points, five rebounds, and a game-best six assists. With the six helpers, Robbins moves up to third in school history in career rebounds. She is also closing in on second in career steals at Trinity.
Natalie Greenwood (Dallas, Texas / Byron Nelson) posted her first career double-double with 15 points and 11 rebounds in 18 minutes off the bench.
Jamie Ruede (Pipe Creek, Texas / Boerne) finished with nine points and three assists, while
Skye O'Rourke (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) had six points and three rebounds in 11 minutes.
Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) led the team with three steals, adding four points, four rebounds, and three steals.
Trinity jumped out to a big lead at the start, then blitzed Centenary with a 31-point third quarter to put the game out of reach. The Tigers shot 45% or better overall and from three-point range, holding the Ladies under 40% in both categories. Trinity also had 19 offensive rebounds to help create an 18-6 advantage in second-chance points, while also scoring 40 of its 88 points in the paint.
The Rundown
The Tigers never trailed in the game as Napoli got the scoring started with a three-pointer in the first minute. Four minutes into the game, Trinity's lead was just two points when Napoli jump-started the offense in a huge way. Her three-pointer began a 12-0 run that featured five different players scoring during the stretch of just over four minutes.
Trinity scored the final five points of the first period to take a 23-8 lead at the quarter break, but the run wasn't over yet. The Tigers also scored five more points to open the second quarter and the lead jumped up to 20 points (28-8) less than a minute into the period. Centenary made its best push of the game over the final seven minutes of the quarter, though, cutting the lead down to just 10 at 41-31 by halftime. The run started with seven straight points, then ended with the Ladies scoring seven of the final nine points of the quarter.
The response by the Tigers was the sixth 30-point quarter of the season, but the first in nearly six weeks dating back to the first of December. That response also didn't come right away as Centenary hung close for the first few minutes and even drew within eight points (46-38) at one point. Napoli nailed another three-pointer on the next possession, then Ruede scored again to quickly make it a 13-point lead again. Later in the quarter, Centenary hit a three-pointer to make it a 60-47 game with 2:36 left, but that proved to be the final points of the period for the visitors. Trinity finished with a flurry of 12 straight points to make it a 74-47 game heading into the final period. Napoli ensured there would be no thoughts of a comeback early in the fourth as she hit three consecutive three-pointers to make it an insurmountable 81-52 Tiger lead after just two minutes.
Coach Speak
"I love Office Christmas Party – my man Clay is a man of the people," began Head Coach
Cameron Hill. "Early in the film he refers to jumping a bridge that later becomes a very crucial part of the ending. In his evaluation of 'a combination of actual physics and pure instinct,' he refers to
The Fast and Furious. And how the films only get more fast, and more furious! Which is true. So, in the third quarter, we hit the NOS button! And bang, we were gone! Here's to a well-deserved day off, one more meaningful work week, and eight more sequels! ONWARD!"
Up Next
Trinity continues its four-game home stand next weekend, hosting Southwestern University and Texas Lutheran University. The Tigers host the Pirates at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, then will take on the Bulldogs at 6:00 p.m. on Saturday.
