Women's Basketball Opens 2024 With Win Over Schreiner

SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger women's basketball team returned to Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference action with an 89-61 win over Schreiner University on Tuesday night in Calgaard Gym.

Trinity remained unbeaten in conference play at 5-0, while also improving its overall record to 10-4 this season. Schreiner fell to 3-11 overall and 2-3 in SCAC, as the Tigers collected their 17th straight win over the Mountaineers and improved to 26-4 all-time in the series.

Sharp-shooters Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Ore. / Valley Catholic) and Jamie Ruede (Pipe Creek, Texas / Boerne) scored 22 points each to lead Trinity to the win, accounting for nearly half of the team's scoring on the night. Napoli hit 8-of-14 from the field and went 6-for-11 from three-point range, while Ruede also knocked down six three-pointers to go with her five rebounds and five steals.

Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) came off the bench with nine points, with Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) and Natalie Greenwood (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson) both chipping in with eight. Greenwood tied Ruede for the team lead with five boards, and Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) dished out a team-best five assists to go with her five points scored.
Trinity shot just under 46% from the field and connected on 18-of-49 from three-point range. The Tiger defense also forced 23 turnovers and held Schreiner to 38.1% shooting on the night.

The Rundown
Trinity came out firing from distance as Ruede knocked down a pair, and Napoli added another to give the Tigers a 9-0 start to the game. Schreiner got no closer than a five-point deficit the rest of the quarter as Trinity began the game with what turned out to be its highest-scoring quarter of the night. Minter got in on the three-point party late in the period and her first bucket of the night gave Trinity its first double-digit lead with just over a minute to go. She also closed out the scoring in the quarter with three free throws to give the Tigers a 29-18 advantage after one.

The second quarter began with three-pointers from Ruede, Timmons, and Napoli to take Trinity's lead to 20 points and force an early timeout by Schreiner. The lead was still 20 at the midway point, though Schreiner did close the half on a 10-3 run to knock the lead down to just 13 (43-30) at the break.

Ruede started the second half with back-to-back three-pointers and the lead was back to 19 points for the Tigers. That lead grew to 25 by the midway point of the third quarter and Trinity's lead never dipped below 20 the rest of the game.

Coach Speak
"The Internship, Googliness," began Head Coach Cameron Hill. "I love the road that Billy and Nick walk throughout the film. The bottom line is that our non-conference schedule was the blender, and now we're saving lives. What!?!? That's right, we were in a blender, and now we're saving lives! I know it's extreme, but that's what it feels like. We will continue to learn from this internship, knowing that the jobs we earn in the end will be worth it! ONWARD!"

Up Next
Trinity continues SCAC play this weekend, but will be on the road against Colorado College. The two Tiger teams square off at 7:30 p.m. (MT) on Friday, January 5.
