Tiger Women's Basketball Downs Austin College Behind Impressive Shooting Performance

SHERMAN - Trinity University Women's basketball takes a 69-59 win against Austin College.

Junior Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Oregon / Valley Catholic) would lead the Tigers by tying her season-high in points with 27. Jamie Ruede (Pipe Creek, Texas / Boerne) and Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) would also put in at least 10 points. TU would shoot 40 percent (10-25) from deep and 44 percent (25-57) from the field.

This win marks the ninth win in a row against Austin College. Trinity is now 33-18 all time against the Roos and are 19-11 when playing in Sherman. Also, with the win, the Tigers maintain a tight lead in the SCAC standings.

The Rundown

The good guys would get their night started when the Roos would leave Josie Napoli wide open for a pull-up three and Napoli must've thought she was in the pool because she made it splash. The Tigers would find their stride offensively and go up by double-digits early with a classic Jamie Ruede bucket from beyond the three-point line. A fast break would ensue with just 12 seconds left and Natalie Greenwood (Dallas, Texas / Byron Nelson) would draw the whistle and the Tigers would end the first quarter up 20-9.

The second quarter would be a slower start for the Tigers as it would take them over two minutes to find the bottom of the net. However, Kylie Minter would put in her first two points of the game with a pull-up jumper from the elbow. The offense would stay relatively slow until Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) hit another three-pointer for the Tigers to grow the lead to 14. The Tigers would grow their lead to 20 on a tough contested layup by Ruede. The Roos couldn't keep up as the Tigers would take a commanding 35-15 lead into the half.

The second half would get started just like the first, with a quick Napoli bucket. The Tigers would pour it on in the third quarter with Elaine King (Cedar Park, Texas / Cedar Park) putting in a basket with Minter and Napoli putting in a three-point firework show. With the seconds ticking off the clock, Maddie Mueller (Houston, Texas / Concordia Lutheran) would find Ruede with a no-look pass through two Austin defenders and Ruede would make the layup for the Tigers to end the quarter with a 61-39 lead.

Austin would finally settle in defensively and put out the Tiger flame for the first four minutes of quarter four until Timmons would sink a free throw. The Tiger passing was fluent as they rocketed the ball around the arc to find an open Minter for yet another three. The Tigers would close out the game to the tune of a 69-59 win.

Coach Speak

"Coming to Sherman is like going back in time," stated Head Coach Cameron Hill. "No matter how the game goes I always feel like somewhere in town, Kevin Bacon is quoting scripture at a town hall meeting trying to secure a dance for the senior class."

"The game wasn't quite a tractor chicken fight, but we did find a way to win the day. I'm proud of the way we've been able to learn some new moves, none better than Willard hitting the Saturday Night Fever though! ONWARD!!!"

Up Next - Charge Into The Metroplex

The Tigers will take on the University of Dallas on Saturday, January 27th at 6:00 PM.
