Box Score IRVING - Tiger Women's Basketball topples the University of Dallas 72-63 on Saturday evening.
The Tigers (16-5) beat Dallas with some grit tonight. Although the Tigers didn't shoot it as well as they normally do, Trinity found some new heroes by the names of
Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) and
Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) to carry the load.
Robbins would finish with 20 points, seven boards, and three blocks. Timmons would also have an excellent line, collecting 15 points and five rebounds. We cannot forget about
Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs), however, as she notched 17 points and seven rebounds.
Trinity is now 46-5 all time against Dallas and are 19-3 when playing in Irving. The Tigers also hold a 25 game win streak against the Crusaders, with their last loss coming all the way back in 2012.
The Rundown
The Tigers and the Crusaders would trade buckets all throughout the game but that could not be more true in the first quarter. The Tigers would get their scoring started with Robbins running the defense and putting a soft lay into the bottom of the hoop. Trinity would not find their footing until the middle of the quarter when
Jamie Ruede (Pipe Creek, Texas / Boerne) would hit a three with her coveted jump shot to give the Tigers a four-point lead. However, Dallas would use the home-court advantage and come back to end the quarter up 17-20.
The second quarter saw both teams struggle early from the field and find a few buckets here and there but the electric defense of the Tigers kept the game close. Back-to-back buckets by the duo of Robbins and Ruede gave the Tigers the lead back. That lead change was exactly the spark that the Tigers needed for the energy to throw the big punches.
Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Oregon / Valley Catholic) and Robbins would put in six more points before the half ended and the buzzer would sound with TU up 37-31 going into the locker room.
The third quarter was all Tigers with the offense catching fire and growing the lead to the biggest of the game, 12. However, the best story for the Tigers was their grit. They would drive the ball into the teeth of the defense and draw hard fouls so they could put in big points from the line. Trinity would shoot 16 free throws in the third quarter and sink thirteen of them. With just 30 seconds left, Dallas would find an open shooter on the three-point line to sink the shot to cut the Tiger lead back to single digits.
The Tigers would quickly bring that deficit back when Robbins paid homage to the late Steve Young as she slung the ball to the outside to find a wide-open Timmons who would make it splash from deep, and the Tigers saw their lead go back to 11. From that point on, the Tigers would sit back and play steel curtain defense to hold the Crusaders to under 10 points for the quarter for 70 percent of the final quarter. Timmons would put the nail in the coffin late and the Tigers would secure the win, 72-63.
Coach Speak
"I feel like we should keep cooking the Bacon," began Head Coach
Cameron Hill. "Tonight was a little like
A Few Good Men: Bacon, playing Captain Jack Ross, was obviously lead council for the Crusaders. The officials, who felt like they had a bone to pick, kept trying to order
code reds against The Togethers! Daniel Kaffee demanded the truth, to which Colonel Jessup confidently declared, 'You can't handle the truth!' The truth is this: you want
Maggie Robbins on that wall...you need
Maggie Robbins on that wall...and guess what? We have
Maggie Robbins on the ball! Shout out to the lone survivor! ONWARD!"
Looking Ahead - Heading to the 'Ville
The Tigers will head to Kerrville to take on Schreiner on Tuesday, February 6th at 7:30 PM.
