Trinity Men’s Soccer Continue Winning Form at Home to McMurry University on Friday Night

Story Links

San Antonio - The Trinity men's soccer team extended their winning streak to seven games with a 2-0 shutout victory over McMurry on Friday night.

The Tigers (7-0-2) have now conceded just one goal in their past seven games, leaving them in the top five nationally for goals against average. This was the Tigers' fifth all-time meeting with the Warhawks and this win helped Trinity maintain their perfect record in the match-up, which now sits at 5-0-0.

With the victory, Trinity Head Coach Paul McGinlay moves into a tie for eighth in NCAA history - all divisions - with his 559th career win. He is currently tied with long-time Rowan University (NJ) Head Coach Dan Gilmore. Coach McGinlay is now seven wins from a tie for seventh in the history of NCAA soccer coaches, which is currently held by former Colorado College Head Coach Horst Richardson.

The Rundown

On an uncharacteristically slow day going forward for the Tigers, it was their relentless defense that helped secure the three points. Senior goalkeeper Joshua Lynch (Hendersonville, Tenn. Merrol Hyde Magnet School) recorded back-to-back shutouts for the first time in his career, making two saves and confidently claiming a number of crosses into the box.

Trinity put up 18 shots across the 90 minutes and recorded a staggering 18 corners, their most in a single game since 2016.  With half time looming and the Tigers chasing a goal, a long throw from Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas Dripping Springs) was flicked on by Braden Shuey (Frisco, Texas Wakeland) and finished at the back post by Sophomore defender Luke Mayfield (Dallas, Texas JJ Pearce), giving him his first goal of the season.

The Tigers came out with more intensity in the second half as they looked to extend their lead. After nice link up play on the left side by Ethan Cowdrey (Crawley, England Ardingly College) and Hunter Cain (Katy, Texas Cinco Ranch), Cain was brought down in the box giving Trinity a penalty in the 58th minute. The senior forward calmly converted from the spot, scoring in his seventh consecutive game and giving him the lead at the top of the SCAC goal scoring chart.

Up Next

Trinity will look to pick up another win in their first away trip of the SCAC season as they travel to Concordia University (TX) at 5:00pm on Sunday evening.
