SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger women's basketball team wrapped up its regular season home schedule with a 90-80 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference victory over Colorado College on Sunday afternoon.
Trinity improved to 18-5 overall and 13-1 in conference play, while Colorado College dropped to 16-7 overall and 10-4 in the SCAC. The win also clinches at least a share of the SCAC Regular Season Championship for Trinity, while also securing the number one seed at the SCAC Tournament that will be played February 23-25 in Shreveport, La.
Maggie Robbins (Plano, Texas / Plano) was honored before the game as Trinity's lone senior, then she tied for the team lead with four assists.
Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Ore. / Valley Catholic) and
Kylie Minter (League City, Texas / Clear Springs) accounted for nearly half of Trinity's scoring in the game, tallying 49 points between the two of them. Napoli scored 25 points on 7-for-10 shooting overall and nailed a perfect 9-of-9 at the foul line. Minter finished with 24 points that included 4-for-5 from beyond the arc, hitting a buzzer-beating three-pointer at the end of the third quarter, and then beating the shot clock with another rushed three-pointer early in the fourth quarter. Minter also had six steals to lead the Tiger defensive effort, while Napoli tied Robbins for the team lead with four assists.
Bailey Timmons (Argyle, Texas / Argyle) was the only other Trinity player to reach double figures, scoring 16 points on the strength of a 9-of-10 performance at the free throw line.
Jamie Ruede (Pipe Creek, Texas / Boerne) chipped in with eight points off the bench.
The Rundown
Trinity took the early momentum by scoring the first five points of the game, beginning with the first of four three-point makes from Minter. The game stayed close as that early five-point lead was the biggest for either team over the entire first quarter of play. Colorado College tied things up 12-12 near the midway point of the period and even took a brief 14-13 lead with 4:33 remaining. Napoli put Trinity back in front on the next possession, then Minter hit a pair of buckets down the stretch to keep the home team in the lead. Colorado College led agaon (21-20) with 60 seconds left, but Trinity got the final points to make it a 21-21 draw after one quarter.
All Trinity did from there was produce its best quarter of the day to pull away to a double-figure lead by halftime. Colorado College was the hot team early in the second, though, scoring six of the first eight points to take a 27-23 lead less than two minutes into the period. The lead was still four at the 5:41 mark when Trinity caught fire with 14 unanswered points to take a 44-34 lead with just under two minutes left before halftime.
Jailyn Martin (Ashburn, Va. / Virginia Academy) nailed a three-pointer in the final seconds to give Trinity a 49-38 lead at the break. That also made it an extended run of 19-4 in Trinity's favor over the final 5:41 of the quarter to take control of the game.
Whatever momentum Trinity had to end the second quarter, Colorado College got it all back to start the third by scoring 10 of the first 11 points to cut the lead to just two at 50-48. Trinity never gave up the lead, though, withstanding the opening run and then scoring seven of the next nine to take a seven-point lead at the midway point of the period. Colorado College never got closer than five points the rest of the quarter, and Minter added her buzzer-beater to close things out and make it a 71-62 lead heading into the final quarter.
Napoli started the fourth with two free throws that put Trinity back in front by double digits, then Minter answered a Colorado College three-pointer with a three of her own to make it a 76-65 advantage less than two minutes into the period. Colorado College drew within eight with 6:42 left, but Napoli took over by scoring 11 straight Trinity points that took the lead as high as 14 points. By the end of her own personal run, Trinity had basically put the game away with an 88-75 lead with just over two minutes to play.
Coach Speak
"Great game today," began Head Coach
Cameron Hill. "Great opponent. Great environment. Our support staff was outstanding. From the outfits to the execution of an important game day for both the men and women. Reminds of the dad in
A Christmas Story. For 364 days of the year, the Old Man Parker bangs away at the furnace, but on Christmas morning, he doesn't miss. So big thanks to the support staff for making our last home game count, and thanks to The TOGETHERS for shooting everyone's eyes out! ONWARD!"
