SAN ANTONIO - No. 22 Tiger Baseball picks up a dominant 8-2 win over Babson College to start the 2024 campaign.
The Tigers (1-0) were slugged at the plate, collecting 7 hits, including a double and a home run. There was help from all over as seven of the nine Trinity hitters would find holes in the defense for hits.
Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / J.B. Alexander) would record the win by going six innings, allowing two earned and striking out three.
Will Hellings (Summit, New Jersey / Summit) earned the save, throwing three scoreless and only allowing three hits.
The Rundown
The offense would get started early for the Tigers with a rip by
Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) for a leadoff double. Trinity put up some good at-bats to put two runners on with two outs in the bottom of the first to set up an absolute nuke by
Brandon Nelson (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) and the Tigers would go up 3-0. They weren't done there, another single by
Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) and an opposite field wall banger from
Ty Preston (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) saw the Tigers go up by four. In the second, back-to-back walks by Babson came back to haunt them because McDonald would execute the hit and run to perfection with a single to center and another run would score to bring the score to 5-0. When it rains, it pours because the Tiger bats were hot.
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) lined a single into left that scored two more and it was looking like a rout in the season opener.
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) tacked on another and it was 8-0 Trinity through two innings.
Senior right-hander
Joseph Chavana put on a clinic for the next two innings, throwing a goose egg up in the third. Chavana went back out in the fourth and fifth innings and let his defense work behind him, forcing a nice 6-4-3 as well as a 4-63 double play to end the frames. Babson would bring in two in the sixth but that's all they would get. Although TU would stop scoring for the rest of the game, it was time for the bullpen to go to work. Hellings would put up a zero in the seventh and then settle in during the eighth and go three up, three down. In the ninth, although he gave up a hit, Hellings slammed the door shut to seal the 8-2 Tiger victory to open the 2024 season.
