SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity University women's tennis team won its second straight match to open up the season, defeating NAIA Our Lady of the Lake University 6-3 on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers move to 2-0 this season, having also defeated Division I University of the Incarnate Word 4-3 two weeks ago. The Saints fell to 2-4 on the season with the loss.
Trinity was red-hot to start the match, sweeping the doubles competition to take a 3-0 lead into singles play.
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) got things going with an 8-0 win at line one.
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) won 8-2 at line two, then
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) and
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) finished things off with an 8-4 win at line three doubles.
The two teams split the singles matches, but Trinity won the first two contests to clinch the match at 5-0 before the rest of the players finished up. Andrade picked up the opening singles win to carry over the Tiger momentum from doubles, then Levy got the clincher with a 6-1, 7-5 win at line three. OLLU got its first point at line six singles, but then Hill scored a hard-fought line one singles win by a score of 0-6, 7-5 (5), 1-0 (10-8).
Trinity will be back home next weekend for a pair of matches on Friday and Saturday, February 16 and 17. The Tigers will host Concordia University (TX) at 4:00 p.m. on Friday, followed by a match against Hardin-Simmons University (TX) at 10:00 a.m. Saturday morning.
