SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's 14th-ranked men's tennis team lost a 7-0 exhibition match against Division I St. John's University (NY) on Friday afternoon.
Despite the lopsided final score, the Tigers played close matches throughout – including tiebreakers in three of the six singles and one of the three doubles matches.
Trinity won at line two doubles as
Rob Chang (Aiea, Hawaii / 'Iolani School) and
Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) took an 8-7 (7-4) victory. That helped the team avoid the doubles sweep, though St. John's had already clinched the doubles point. Chang also played in a tough line two singles match, falling 6-4, 7-6 (9-7) in what turned out to be the clincher for the visitors.
Connor Whittington (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) stormed to a 7-5 win in his line four singles match, but lost the next two sets in the only match that went to a third set.
Jared Perry (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) played two tight sets at line one singles, though he came up short with 7-6 losses in both.
Aashish Dhanani (Austin, Texas / Westwood) nearly forced a third set at line five as well, eventually losing 6-4, 7-6 (9-7).
