SAN ANTONIO – The 16th-ranked Trinity University women's tennis team suffered its first loss of the season as second-ranked University of Chicago earned a 9-0 victory on Monday afternoon.
The Tigers (7-1) came into the day having won seven consecutive matches to start the season, including yesterday's 5-4 win over #19 Case Western Reserve University (OH). Chicago (8-1) also had seven straight wins to start the season, but lost to Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Colleges (CA) in its last match just over a week ago.
Trinity fell behind early as Chicago swept the doubles, with
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) and
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) playing the closest match in an 8-6 loss to close out doubles play. Cushing, Levy, and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) all fought their way to a third set in singles action. Cushing won the second set 7-5 to force a third-set super tiebreaker, but wound up on the short end of a 10-8 score. Levy also rallied with a 6-4 win in set two, then was edged 7-6 (5) in the third set. Kim was the final match on the court at line four, but fell in a 7-6 (7) tiebreaker as well.
