KERRVILLE, Texas – The 14th-ranked Tiger baseball team opened up a Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference weekend on the road with a 10-4 win over Schreiner University on Friday afternoon.
Trinity improved to 13-6 overall and 3-1 in SCAC play, while the Mountaineers fell to 6-15 this season and hold a 1-2 mark in conference action. The Tigers broke the game open with a five-run third inning and led by as much as 9-0 after the sixth. Schreiner added runs in the seventh and ninth innings to avoid the shutout, but the big lead held for the Tigers.
Starting pitcher
Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / Alexander) improved to 4-0 this season after giving up just two runs on eight hits over his seven-inning appearance.
Trajan Lee (Dallas, Texas / John Paull II) struck out five batters in the final two innings, allowing two unearned runs on three hits.
Jack Peterson (Round Rock, Texas / Round Rock) paced Trinity's offensive output with a 2-for-5 performance that included three RBI and two runs scored, including his fourth home run this season.
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) also went 2-for-5 with two homers and takes the team lead with five roundtrippers this season.
Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, Calif. / Palos Verdes Peninsula) also had a double, a triple, and two RBI for the Tigers, while
Maddox McDonald (San Antonio, Texas / Antonian) went 2-for-3 with two runs scored.
The Rundown
Both teams had runners on third with two outs in the first inning, but the starting pitchers kept the game scoreless through the first two innings. Trinity's breakout inning began with McDonald getting a single to lead off the third. After Peterson followed with a single of his own, Woodward tripled to drive in the first two runs of the game.
Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) drove in the next run with Trinity's fourth straight hit in the inning. Two batters later,
Korson Hastings (San Antonio, Texas / Churchill) doubled in Lazzara, then
Colt Harris (Katy, Texas / Houston Christian) drove in the final run of the inning with a sac fly to make it 5-0.
Holloway smashed a solo homer in the top of the fifth to put the Tigers in front 6-0, then Peterson hit a three-run bomb in the sixth to take the lead all the way to 9-0.
Jack Baker (Missouri City, Texas / Ridge Point) got things started with a one-out hit, then McDonald had a hit of his own ahead of the Peterson long ball.
Chavana pitched around baserunners in each of the first five innings, then had his first 1-2-3 inning in the bottom of the sixth. Schreiner loaded the bases with two outs in the bottom of the seventh, then scored runs on back-to-back singles to cut the lead to just 9-2.
Lee came on in the eight for the Tigers and got two strikeouts in his first frame, then Holloway kicked off the ninth with another solo homer to put Trinity into double figures with a 10-2 lead. Two hits, an error, and a walk led to two unearned runs in the bottom of the ninth for Schreiner, but Lee struck out the side to close out the victory.
