SAN ANTONIO – The ninth-ranked Trinity women's tennis team was tripped up in a 6-3 loss to 10th-ranked Washington University-St. Louis on Friday afternoon.
The Tigers fell to 9-3 on the season with the loss, while the Bears improved to 9-2 with the win. All three of Trinity's losses this season have come against teams ranked in the top 10 nationally.
Trinity opened doubles with an 8-3 win at line three by
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa), but WashU evened the match with a narrow 8-6 win over the top-line Tiger doubles team of
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain). The Bears took the lead with a hard-fought 8-6 (8-6) win over Trinity's
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) and
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) to take the 2-1 lead.
WashU won the first two singles matches in straight sets to keep the momentum going, then Hughes forced a third set at line two singles before falling in the third-set clincher. Cushing won her opening set, then eventually fell in the third set at line six. Undaunted, the Tigers rallied to win the final two singles matches and end the day on a high note. Hill won 6-4 in the opening set at #1 singles, then lost a narrow 7-6 (8-6) second set, but she rallied for a 6-4 win in the third to clinch her victory. Andrade was also locked in a battle at line five, rallying for a 6-3 win in the second set to force a third. She then ended the match with a 7-6 (7-5) win in the third.
