ATLANTA – The 12th-ranked Tiger women's tennis team pulled out a 5-4 win over 15th-ranked Babson College (MA) on Saturday.
Trinity improved to 10-3 with the win, dropping Babson to 7-4 in the first meeting between the two schools in women's tennis. The match was played on the campus of third-ranked Emory University, which will host the Tigers tomorrow.
Doubles began with Babson securing the first point, but Trinity came back with a big 8-6 win for top-line doubles team
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) that tied things up. The #3 doubles team of
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) was down 4-7 in their match, but rallied for a critical 8-7 (7-4) tiebreaker win that put Trinity in front 2-1 heading into singles action.
The Beavers were unfazed by the Trinity rally in the last doubles match, coming out swinging with wins at #1 and #2 singles to take the 3-2 lead. The Tigers were equally determined to get the win, though, and battled back to tie things up on the strength of a 7-5, 6-3 win by Kim at line four.
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) then overcame a first-set loss to gut out a 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 win at line three that put the Tigers in front 4-3.
Andrade and
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) were the final two matches on the court and both took opening-set wins to put Trinity in control. Andrade won 6-0 in her opener, but fell 6-3 to send her match to a third set. Cushing also came up short in a narrow 6-4 loss in her second. Andrade was edged 6-4 in the third set, which once again tied things up 4-4. Cushing would not be denied, though, cruising to a 6-0 win to clinch the victory for the Tigers.
