No. 17 Tiger Baseball is slated for six games in seven days next week as they take on Mary Hardin-Baylor, DeSales, Texas-Dallas, Centenary, and East Texas Baptist.
Â
The Tigers (4-2) split their series against the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater. Although Trinity dropped the first two games, the Tigers came back with two big wins. Infielder
Cristian Holloway (Brownsville, Texas / Veterans Memorial) put in good plate appearances across four games. Holloway hit to the tune of a .357 average (5-14) while collecting four RBIs and three doubles. Junior
Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson) had an exceptional outing on the hill for the Tigers. Teer threw a complete game, only allowed one run, and struck out 20. With his insane strikeout total, he would tie the Trinity all time record for strikeouts in a game and break the SCAC record for strikeouts in a game.Â
Â
SCAC Pitcher of the Week – Jackson Teer
Â
For the second time this season and second week in a row,
Jackson Teer has been selected as the SCAC Pitcher of the week.
Â
From the SCAC Press Release:
Â
Teer put up a record-breaking performance for No. 19 Trinity in Saturday's 9-1 win over No. 22 UW-Whitewater, finishing with 20 strikeouts over a complete-game victory that earned a series split for the weekend. The junior broke the SCAC record for strikeouts in a game and tied a Trinity single-game record that was first set in 1965. The former conference mark had been held by Mike Frost of Trinity, who struck out 18 batters in a 3/25/2004 contest against Dallas.
Teer is the just the 14th player in Division III history to record 20 or more strikeouts in a game and was just two off the all-time record. Teer improved to 2-0 this season with his first complete game of the year, allowing one run on four hits and didn't issue a walk in the game.
Â
Preview - Big Week
Â
The Tigers will open next week against the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor on March 5th at 7:00 PM, then Desales on March 7th at 7:00 PM. The Tigers will then play back-to-back-to-back games when they play against the University of Texas-Dallas on March 8th at 7:00 PM, then Centenary College on March 9th at 3:00 PM, and finally playing against the University of Texas-Dallas again on March 10th at 1:00 PM. Trinity will finish this six-game stretch by heading to Marshall to match up against East Texas Baptist on March 12th with the first pitch slated for 6:00 PM.Â
Â
On the Mary Hardin-Baylor Crusaders: UMHB is 9-1 so far this season. The Crusaders started the season with a hot 8-0 start before dropping their most recent game 9-10 to Howard Payne in 12 innings. UMHB is winning their games behind some strong bullpen arms. Five of the eight pitchers out of the pen this season are under a 4.00 ERA. The Crusaders are also hitting .364 with 20 doubles this season. The top of this lineup will be solid with four batters hitting over .400 so far, this will be a good matchup for Tiger pitching. All time, the Tigers are 29-11 against UMHB.
Â
On the DeSales Bulldogs: The Bulldogs of Pennsylvania are 4-2 this season. Before they make their yearly road trip to Texas this season, DeSales shows some stellar pitching. The Bulldog staff has not allowed more than 10 runs this season. The Bulldogs will rely heavily on their starting rotation to shut down teams early. Although Desales does have a high team batting average, they have not shown much power yet as they have only accumulated 12 doubles. JT Anderosky will lead the lineup as he has three doubles, a triple, and a .630 slugging percentage. The Tigers hold a seven-game winning streak against DeSales and are 13-2 all time.Â
Â
On the UT-Dallas Comets: So far, the Comets are 8-3 this season. There is power everywhere in this UTD lineup. In their eleven games, the Comets have 15 total home runs to go along with 22 doubles. The lineup has also scored over 10 runs in five of those games. Watch out for senior outfielder Luke Finn. Finn has seven home runs and a .383 average. The UTD pitching staff has good stuff, averaging about eight strikeouts per game. This game could shape up to be an offensive shootout. Trinity is 8-6 against the Comets and is 4-1 at home.Â
Â
On the Centenary Gents: The Gents are 5-4 and have put up some good offensive numbers so far this season. In all but one game this season, Centenary has collected more than 10 hits and currently holds a .334 team batting average. With the bat, the Gents are led by a trio of big bats in the middle of the order. Carson Livesay will lead off and bat third occasionally, nevertheless, he is batting .415 and has crushed three homers and five doubles. The Gents will also sport two starters with ERAs under 3.00. Either way, the Gents are a tough team and this will be a good, early look at them for the Tigers. All time, the Tigers are 36-20.Â
Â
On the No. 8 ETBU Tigers: The Marshall Tigers are 9-3 this season. This 2023 regional rematch will be the first of two games between these two teams in the 2024 season. ETBU threw a combined no-hitter against No. 6 Lynchburg earlier this season. The offense has sputtered this season, only batting .302 compared to last year's .340 season. However, ETBU will play behind two starting pitchers with ERAs lower than 2.00. Leading that charge is Sayers Collins. The right-hander has thrown 19.1 innings and only allowed four hits. If the Tigers can get to the bullpen, however, there is potential for the Trinity bats to light up the scoreboard. Trinity Tigers are 2-2 all time against the ETBU Tigers.Â
Â
Key To The Game
Â
Arm Barn: With the Tigers slated to face many heavy-hitting lineups, they will lean on the Tiger pitching staff to put up bagels on the scoreboard so that the bats can get into a rhythm. The Tigers will have every arm available for this long week of baseball. Look for
Will Hellings (Summit, New Jersey / Summit) and
Trajan Lee (Dallas, Texas / John Paul II) to lead the bullpen and slam the door on opposing bats.Â
Â
Looking Ahead - Conference Opener
Â
The Tigers will open SCAC Play against Southwestern on March 15th, 16th, and 17th.Â
