Tiger Softball Sweeps Southwestern On Senior Day

SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Softball collects two wins on their way to sweeping Southwestern on Saturday afternoon.

The Tigers (25-9) nabbed a 6-3 win in game one and took a 1-0 victory in a thrilling game two. Cameron Bishop (Austin, Texas / Stephen F. Austin) got the win in game one with her 2.1 shutout innings in relief, bringing her overall record to 6-2. Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, California / Thousand Oaks) came in clutch in the circle to earn her first save for the season. The twins Hannah Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) and Sydney Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) got two hits in game one and Hannah added another in game two. Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy of Arts Careers and Technology) was incredible in the circle for game two as she threw a complete game shutout and only allowed four hits. The Tigers move to 13-2 in SCAC play and 29-35 all-time against Southwestern.

Game One - Tigers 6, Pirates 3

Megan Kriechbaum (Cedar Hills, Utah / Pleasant Grove) sat down Southwestern in order to start the afternoon and then we had another classic story of Trinity Softball showing off the bats early. Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura Hills) led off with a hit-by-pitch and what did the Tigers do? That's right, bunt her over. As Hannah Boudreaux singled to right, there were runners on the corners with less than two outs. As the next pitch got released, Boudreaux took off and the Pirates tried to cut the ball off to get Tawaga at the plate but with her wheels, she was in there with more than enough time and the Tigers were on the board. Sydney Boudreaux is a great sister because she sent a ball into right that scored Hannah and TU would be up 2-0 through one.

In the bottom of the second, Peyton Bowser (Arvada, Colorado / West) turned around an 0-2 pitch up the middle to start the inning with the single. Just like in the first, it was a bunt that put her into scoring position. Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom) brought Bower to third with a one-bagger to left and Bowser would find her way home on a wild pitch by Southwestern. Through two, the Tigers had a nice 3-0 lead. Both squads would stay quiet through the next three innings but fast forward to the fifth, Southwestern woke up the bats to tie the game at 3 a piece. Jordyn Williams (Clayton, California / Clayton Valley Charter) started a two-out rally for Trinity with a single to right center. Head Coach Bailey Wittenauer brought in the speedy Ella Whitacre (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson) to run and she immediately swiped second base. Sydney Boudreaux was ready for the Tigers to retake the lead as she smashed another single to score Whitacre and TU was back on top, 4-3.

The sixth featured more offense from Trinity when Koelewyn rocketed a ball off the left-field wall for a lead off single and the Tiger fans were on their feet. Baltzell must be a fan of the TI-84 because she placed a perfectly calculated bunt in between the Pirate defense for a single. Tagawa brought in another run with an out to second and Baltzell advanced to third. With Sydney Watson (San Antonio, Texas / San Antonio Christian) at the dish, Coach Wittenauer wanted to put the pressure on. Watson laid down the safety squeeze with precision and Baltzell slid in and pumped her fist as the Tigers extended their lead to 6-3. Southwestern tried to make it interesting by putting runners on first and second but Arce slammed the door and Trinity took game one 6-3.

Game Two - Tigers 1, Pirates 0

The shutout was nothing short of spectacular from the get-go. Even though Southwestern got the lead off batter on, Zoe Frausto (Katy, Texas / Morton Ranch) channeled her inner Yadier Molina and gunned the runner down trying to steal third and that would be one of many plays that the Tiger defense would make in game number two. In the bottom of the inning, Watson walked and advanced to second on a groundout. With two outs, in stepped Jordan Arce. With a rope to right center, Arce showed that she had that D-O-Double G in her as she brought in the run that was ultimately the decider.

Both teams would sprinkle hits here and there but it was the defense that shined on senior day. Hand out gold gloves all around because the Tiger defense was making plays. The biggest moments came in the final innings. Southwestern started with a fly out but quickly found their way on with a single. The next batter hit a bouncer that was stabbed deep in the hole by Baltzell who sent a laser to first to record the second out. The next Pirate batter hit a chopper to Bowser, Bowser sent a short hop to Williams and Williams played it to perfection. Tigers sweep the Pirates with a 1-0 win.
