SAN ANTONIO – The seventh-ranked Tiger men's tennis team recorded a 9-0 sweep over the University of California-Santa Cruz on Saturday afternoon.
Trinity improved to 11-8 this season with the win, which is the fourth straight in the series against UC-Santa Cruz (8-9). The Tigers have not lost to the Banana Slugs since the 2012 season, though Trinity is just 4-3 against UCSC since 2011.
Conor Kaczmarczyk (Aurora, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) and
Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep) got the party started for Trinity with an 8-1 win at line two doubles.
Connor Whittington (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) and
Rafa Candelas (Zacatecas, Mexico / American School) joined in a line three doubles with an 8-4 victory, followed shortly after by
Jared Perry (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) and
Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) notching the same score at #1 doubles to complete the sweep for a 3-0 lead.
Aashish Dhanani (Austin, Texas / Westwood) was the first Tiger to wrap up singles with a 6-1, 6-1 win at line four, then Perry got the clincher at #1 singles with a 6-2, 6-1 win. Whittington won 6-1, 6-2 at line two to keep the shutout going, then Liao won 6-2, 6-1 at line five to make it 7-0.
Ivan Nikolovski (Alpine, N.J. / Dwight Global) was next at #6 singles with a 6-3, 6-4 win, before Flores finished off the sweep with his 6-3, 7-5 victory at line three.
