SAN ANTONIO – The sixth-ranked Tiger men's tennis team notched a 6-3 Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference win over Southwestern University on Friday night.
Trinity improved to 12-8 this season with the win, while the Pirates are also now 12-8 on the year following the loss. The Tigers have now won 16 of the last 18 meetings between the two teams, dating back to the 2010 season.
The Tigers took a 2-1 lead after doubles, clinching the advantage by winning at lines two and three to start things off.
Rob Chang (Aiea, Hawaii / 'Iolani School) and
Dalton Locke (Humble, Texas / Kingwood) notched an 8-3 win for the opening point, followed by
Conor Kaczmarczyk (Aurora, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) and
Aashish Dhanani (Austin, Texas / Westwood) assuring Trinity of a lead with their 8-3 win as well.
Jared Perry (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) and
Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) were edged 8-6 at line one as Southwestern avoided the doubles sweep.
Trinity took the first two singles matches to move within a point of clinching the win.
Connor Whittington (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) began singles with his 6-3, 6-0 win at line two, then Chang scored a 6-1 6-3 win at #3 singles to make it 4-1. Southwestern won at line four for its first singles victory, but it was just delaying the inevitable. Dhanani clinched with a 6-4, 6-4 win at #5 singles and a 5-2 match lead at the time.
Ivan Nikolovski (Alpine, N.J. / Dwight Global) won 7-6 (7-0), 6-4 for Trinity's final point at line six, though Perry fought to the bitter end at #1 singles before falling 3-6, 6-1, 6-7 (5-7).
