ATLANTA – Trinity's 12th-ranked women's tennis team fell short in a road match at third-ranked Emory University (GA) on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers fell to 10-4 this season, though all four defeats have come at the hands of an opponent ranked in the top 10 nationally. Emory improved to 12-3 with the win.
Trinity's #1 doubles team of
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Ariz. / Desert Mountain) opened the match with an 8-6 victory to get the team started off on the right foot, but Emory battled back to win the next two matches to take a 2-1 lead into singles play. Both matches went to tiebreakers, in which the Tigers fell just short.
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) and
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) lost 8-7 (7-3) at line three, then
Cate Cushing (Colleyville, Texas / Heritage) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, Calif. / Weil Tennis Academy) were edged 8-7 (8-6) at line two to put the Eagles in front.
Emory grabbed the first two singles wins as well to make it 4-1 at the time. Hill split her first two sets at line one, then took the third 6-4 to earn the win and keep the home team from clinching. Cushing battled back with a 7-5 win in the second set to keep her #6 singles match going, but ultimately fell in the third to give the Eagles the clinch. Andrade and Hughes also fought to a third set at lines five and two, respectively, though both also came up short in the end.
