No. 14 Tiger Baseball Digs In To Face McMurry And Texas Lutheran

No. 14 Tiger Baseball takes on McMurry in a midweek game before rumbling into SCAC play against TLU.

The Tigers (21-7, 10-2 SCAC) swept Austin College last weekend. Nicholas Lazzara (Carrollton, Texas / Jesuit College Prep) was on an offensive prowess as he went 10-14 (.714) and had six RBIs. Kaleb Woodward (San Pedro, California / Palos Verdes Peninsula) also had a fantastic weekend, hitting .500 (6-12) while also collecting a triple and scoring five runs. Jonathan Newman (Pearland, Texas / Pearland) had another dominant outing out of the pen, going three shutout innings and earning a save. Newman wasn't the only dominant pitcher, however, because the starting pitcher trio of Joseph Chavana (Laredo, Texas / J.B. Alexander), Jackson Teer (San Antonio, Texas / Johnson), and Trajan Lee (Dallas, Texas / John Paul II) combined for 20 total innings and only allowed three runs (1.34 ERA). The Tigers retain their first place standing in the conference, one win ahead of Centenary College. Texas Lutheran and Southwestern round out the top four.

Preview - Warhawks and Bulldogs

Trinity will play in a single game against McMurry on Tuesday, April 9th at 5:00 PM. The Tigers will have a few days off before TLU rolls into San Antonio. The dog versus cat match up will begin on Friday, April 12th at 6:00 PM. The next game will be on April 13th at 2:00 PM with the final game being on April 14th at 1:00 PM.

On the McMurry Warhawks: The Warhawks are just above .500 as they hold a 15-14 record this season. McMurry is coming off a series win against Sul Ross State and a victory over the University of Dallas. The Warhawk lineup can be dangerous as four players are hitting .300 or better. Sophomore Riley Hood is leading the team with a .427 average and 50 hits. McMurry does have pop and will hurt you if you leave pitches over the plate. From the pitching perspective, the Warhawks have struggled with finding a third starter but the bullpen has been very consistent this season. That being said, McMurry is very competitive and has the tools to be a good team. All time, the Tigers are 10-13 against McMurry.

On the Texas Lutheran Bulldogs: Texas Lutheran has a record of 18-11 (7-5 SCAC) so far. The Bulldogs are coming off of back-to-back sweeps against Austin College and Schreiner. Despite their record, TLU has struggled against some of the tougher teams as they have been swept by both UT-Dallas and St. Thomas. Don't let the .278 average fool you because Texas Lutheran has always been a team that lives by the extra-base hit. The Bulldogs have hit 41 doubles, 10 triples, and 16 home runs this season. Xavier Arias is the most lethal bat in the lineup as he has a .330 average with five doubles and four home runs. TLU is also going to ride the arms that they have. The Bulldogs have only used 10 pitchers this season and have been successful so this will be a good match up for the Tiger lineup. All in all, Trinity is 43-40 against Texas Lutheran in all time match ups.

Looking Ahead

The Tigers will travel to Abilene to play against Hardin-Simmons on April 16th.
