Tiger Women's Soccer Closes Home Weekend With Shutout Victory

Story Links

SAN ANTONIO – The Tiger women's soccer team finished off its opening weekend of play with a thrilling 3-0 win over Hardin-Simmons University on Sunday night.

Trinity (1-0-1) bounced back nicely from a scoreless tie against Occidental College (CA) in last night's first game of the season. The Tigers scored twice in the first half to put the Cowgirls on their heels, then clinched the victory with another goal in the 79th minute of play.

Junior transfer Bri Werner (Woodbine, Md. / Glenelg) scored the eventual game-winning goal in the 12th minute, then added an assist on the final goal of just her second game with the Tigers.
That goal came as the Hardin-Simmons defense attempted to clear the ball, but pressure from Abby Schneider (Albuquerque, N.M. / Bosque School) forced the ball back, and Werner stepped in to take control. She quickly turned and pushed her shot over the keeper to give Trinity the early advantage.

That was all the Tiger defense needed, led by goalkeeper Lauryn Lewis (Carrollton, Texas / Creekview). The defense allowed just 10 total shots in the game, though only two were on-target attempts. Lewis recorded a pair of saves to post her second clean sheet of the season, as well as the 16th over her career.

In the 24th minute, Michaela Bosco (Weatherford, Texas / Weatherford) gained control of the ball and fought off a defender before turning back towards goal to find her teammate, Malea Cesar (Portland, Ore. / Sunset). Cesar took the pass in stride and fired from 25 yards out to make it a 2-0 lead.

In the 79th minute, Werner crossed in a dangerous ball in front of the net that was spilled by the keeper, and Madisyn Barganski (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) was there for the rebound goal to put the finishing touches on the win.

Up Next
Trinity will be back in action next weekend, though this time the Tigers will be on the road. Trinity takes on Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference foe Texas Lutheran University in a non-conference tilt. The teams square off on Friday, September 6, at 6:00 p.m.
