Tiger Men's Soccer Ties Against Methodist To Close Out Opening Weekend

SAN ANTONIO - Trinity University Men's Soccer fought hard to secure a 1-1 draw against Methodist on Sunday night.

Despite playing with a short-handed team, the Tigers (0-0-2) managed to secure the draw. Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) scored his second goal in as many games, and Will Powell (Bexley, Kent / Beth Grammar School) recorded his first assist of the season and sixth of his career. Trinity outshot the Monarchs 16-7, including 5-4 in shots on goal. With this result, Trinity's all-time record against Methodist stands at 1-0-1.

How It Happened

The first half was a defensive battle, with neither team threatening to score until Knutson took a powerful shot at the Methodist goalie, marking the match's first shot on goal. Knutson soon had another scoring chance with a worm-burning drive to the lower right corner, requiring a diving save from the keeper. In the 36th minute, Trinity capitalized on a heavy touch by a Methodist player, allowing Joey Perryman (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) to take a strong shot that narrowly missed the crossbar. The Tigers maintained strong defense for the remainder of the half, leading to a 0-0 score at halftime.

After 30 minutes of scoreless play in the second half, Methodist took the lead with a free kick from just outside the box. Despite being down a player, Trinity responded well. Louis Instrall (London, England / Hampton School) passed to Powell, who sent a ground cross to Knutson at the penalty spot. Knutson finished with a precise shot into the top left corner, leveling the score at 1-1. The Tigers had two more close chances to score later in the match, but both efforts narrowly missed. The game ended in a 1-1 draw as both teams gave their all on the field.
