Trinity Men's Soccer Blanks Whitworth on Friday Night

Story Links

SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's men's soccer team opened up the weekend with a convincing 4-0 win over Whitworth University (WA) on Friday night.

The Tigers (1-0-2) doubled their scoring total from the first two games of the young season, while also picking up the team's first shutout of the season. Goalkeeper Omar Satpathy (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley) secured his first career clean sheet, facing just three total shots and only one shot-on-goal. Trinity held a 22-3 advantage in shots, while also collecting 15 total corner kicks in the game.

The teams spent the opening part of the first half figuring each other out, but Trinity broke through with the game-winning goal in the 31st minute – converting on just the fourth shot of the game to that point. Grad transfer Mark Donnelly (Belfast, Ireland / St. Malachy's College Belfast) notched his sixth career goal and his second game-winner, though it marked his first goal with the Tigers. Louis Instrall (London, England / Hampton School) earned the assist on the Donnelly goal, crossing a ball on the ground from the right side of the attack – allowing Donnelly to punch it in. The assist was the first this season for Instrall, though it is the sixth of his career.

The teams went to halftime with Trinity leading just 1-0, but the home team came out on fire after the short break. Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) got the second-half scoring started with his unassisted goal in the 49th minute. Knutson took a pass from teammate Cade Dougan (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal) and continued towards the middle of the field, but then he switched direction and left his defender behind. Knutson pushed towards the top of the box before sending a rocket shot into the net from just over 20 yards out to make it 2-0, tallying his team-leading third goal of the season, and the 16th of his career.

Less than four minutes later, Trinity was at it again with another goal that essentially put the game out of reach. In the 53rd minute, the Tigers took advantage of their second consecutive corner, as Cameron Smith (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands / Cayman Prep) lofted a curling kick to the back post. Hunter Cain (Katy, Texas / Cinco Ranch) was there with a free header to score his first goal of the season, which was also his 16th career goal.

Dougan and Knutson hooked up again for what proved to be the final goal of the game in the 63rd minute, but this time it was Dougan who scored. Both players were inside the 18-yard box when Knutson's initial shot was blocked by a Whitworth defender. The loose ball was picked up quickly by Dougan, who buried it for his first career goal and a 4-0 Tiger lead.
