Tiger Women's Soccer Falls To No. 5 Christopher Newport

NEWPORT NEWS, VIRGINIA - Trinity University Women's Soccer falls to top-five Christopher Newport University (CNU) on Friday evening.

The Tigers (3-1-2) dropped the match 4-2. Arianna Balgobin (Lakeville, Minnesota / Lakeville North) and Madisyn Barganski (Corpus Christi, Texas / Flour Bluff) scored their second goals of the season and Ellie Kriek (New Orleans, Louisiana / The Willow School) added her second assist. The Tigers were only the third team to take the lead on CNU in their last 34 games, dating back to 2022.

The Rundown

This highly anticipated matchup between two strong soccer teams started off quietly for the first 15 minutes. Then, in the 16th minute, Christopher Newport scored a goal after causing some chaos in the box. CNU had numerous shots in the first half, but none were on target. Trinity finally made their move in the 37th minute when Isabella Rueda (Broomfield, Colorado / Prospect Ridge) took a shot that went just left of the goal. With just that sliver of momentum, the Tigers made their move. In the 40th minute, they lined up for a corner kick, and Ellie Kriek delivered a perfect cross to the top of the six-yard box. Madisyn Barganski headed the ball past the diving goalkeeper, leveling the score at 1-1. But Trinity wasn't finished yet. With just 14 seconds left in the half, Arianna Balgobin noticed that the CNU keeper was out of position. She took advantage of this opening and scored, putting Trinity ahead 2-1 at the half.

Unfortunately for Trinity, CNU scored two more times in the second half and the Tigers could not capitalize on any of their three shots. The Tigers drop the match 4-2.
