SAN ANTONIO – Trinity's men's soccer team capped off a prolific weekend at home with a 6-0 victory over Berry College (GA) on Sunday afternoon.
The Tigers (2-0-2) have piled up 10 goals over the last two games, while also limiting the opposition to zero goals on just seven total shots. Trinity's defense gave up two shots in each half against Berry on Sunday, though none of those attempts were on-target. Today also marked the first meeting between Trinity and Berry in men's soccer.
There were six different Trinity players who scored goals in the game, with
Will Powell (Bexley, England / Beth Grammar School) notching a career-high three assists.
Omkar Satpathy (Pleasanton, Calif. / Amador Valley) was credited with his second straight shutout, helped by a defense that yielded just four total shots.
Trinity and Berry played to a scoreless tie over the first half of play, with the Tigers holding a narrow 6-2 advantage in total shots. Neither team had a shot-on-goal in the opening period, though Trinity had a pair of good opportunities.
Berry actually had the first legitimate scoring chance in the seventh minute with a long-range attempt that bounced off the right cross bar. That led to another chance inside the box on a bicycle kick, but the shot went over the bar and the game remained scoreless.
Trinity got its offense rolling after that and eventually would hold 58% of the possession in the first half of play.
Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) had an open look in the 17th minute that was blocked by the defense for a corner kick.
Cameron Smith (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands) came out on a short corner and delivered a dangerous cross to the far post, but the Berry goalkeeper made a goal-saving play to keep the Tigers off the board.
Jason Sukow (Jacksonville Beach, Fla. / Reagan) finished off a strong run with just over two minutes left in the half, though his shot stayed above the bar and the teams went to the half tied 0-0.
It didn't take much time after the half for the Tigers to finally get going in this game, as Sukow began a run in the 49th minute with a nice leading pass down the right side for Powell. Powell slid his cross in front of the goal where
Ty Jarrett (Austin, Texas / Westlake) was able to knock in the eventual game-winner – his first score of the season.
That ignited a furious offensive outburst from the Tigers, starting with Knutson clanging a shot off the post less than three minutes after Trinity took the lead. In the 56th minute, Powell picked up his second assist of the day to set up
Louis Instrall (London, England / Hampton School) for the goal. Powell won a header that he played forward to Instrall, whose shot started above the goal and dipped down for an exciting score and a 2-0 lead.
Not 10 minutes later, Knutson finally got the goal he had come close to all day. Jarrett provided the assist for Knutson, who has now scored a goal in each of the season's first four games for the Tigers. His first two answered goals by the opposition and set up Trinity for a pair of 1-1 draws the first weekend. Knutson also scored in Friday's 4-0 win over Whitworth University (WA).
Hunter Cain (Katy, Texas / Cinco Ranch) also scored for the second straight game for the Tigers, taking an assist from Powell in the 68th minute. The 77th minute featured a nice build-up from Trinity that led to another score and a 5-0 lead.
Aiden Perales (Corpus Christi, Texas / Veterans Memorial) played a ball down the right side much like Sukow did earlier in the period, but Perales got it to
Joey Perryman (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound). Perryman cut his pass back into play and in front of the net, where
Samuel Theiss (Boerne, Texas / Boerne) was there for the score. Theiss then set up
Mark Donnelly (Belfast, Ireland / St. Malachy's College Belfast) for the final score of the game just over two minutes later. Theiss sent the ball towards the box for Donnelly, who cut back to beat his defender, and then buried a goal for the second consecutive game.
