Tiger Women's Basketball Takes On SCAC Newcomers

Trinity University Women's Hoops takes a second crack at the new kids in the Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC).

The Tigers (9-6, 5-1 SCAC) had an impressive weekend, securing two victories. They dominated Dallas with a 124-79 win and followed up with a thrilling 87-83 overtime victory against Austin College.

In the game against Dallas, Livy Sauvageau (Houston, Texas / Second Baptist) set a career-high with 25 points, shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc and 8-13 from the field. Against Austin College, Josie Napoli (Beaverton, Oregon / Valley Catholic) led the team with 27 points, going an impressive 15-16 from the free throw line and contributing seven assists.

Across both games, the Tigers had 10 individual performances where players scored over 10 points. The team currently ranks seventh nationally in assists per game (18.1), eighth in scoring offense (79.2), and 24th in total points (1,188).

Preview - Second Crack

The Tigers will start their road weekend in Abilene against McMurry on Friday, January 24th at 5:30 PM. Then, after a travel day, Trinity will be in Austin, Texas to take on Concordia at noon on Sunday, January 26th.

On the McMurry War Hawks: The War Hawks, now 10-3 (3-1 SCAC), have played three games since their last meeting with the Tigers a few weeks ago. Following their victory over Trinity, McMurry secured wins against Schreiner (70-60) and St. Thomas (58-49) before falling to Colorado College (51-70). Defensively, the War Hawks excel at limiting their opponents, holding teams to just 34% shooting from the field and 24% from beyond the arc. Guard Emily Holland leads McMurry's offense, averaging 14 points per game while shooting over 40% from the field. In their previous matchup, the War Hawks defeated the Tigers despite Trinity outshooting McMurry. The War Hawks' defense held the Tigers to a near season-low 57 points. Historically, the two teams are closely matched, with Trinity holding a slight edge in the all-time series, 8-7.

On the Concordia Tornadoes: The Tornadoes are currently 6-7 (1-3 SCAC) this season. After their January 12th loss to the Tigers, Concordia secured a 70-60 win over Schreiner but then suffered back-to-back losses to Colorado College and St. Thomas. Over their last five games, Concordia has gone 1-4. Three-point shooting has been a significant challenge for CTX, as the team is shooting just 27% from beyond the arc. However, Destiny Matthews provides a dominant offensive presence, averaging nearly 25 points per game, which ranks her 5th nationally in scoring. In their previous matchup, the Tigers defeated the Tornadoes 77-61, improving their all-time record against Concordia to 7-0.

Looking Ahead

Trinity will return home to play against Ozarks and Centenary on January 31st and February 1st.
