The Rundown
Â
The Tigers started the game strong, with Timmons driving into the lane and passing the ball to Napoli on the wing for a three-pointer on the opening possession. A few minutes later, Trinity went on a 10-3 run, extending their lead to 15-6. However, Concordia wasn't discouraged and responded with an 11-4 run of their own, cutting the deficit to just two points with 15 seconds remaining in the first quarter. A late free throw by Concordia (CTX) left Trinity narrowly ahead, 19-18, at the end of the quarter.
Â
At the start of the second quarter, Timmons drove into the paint for back-to-back layups, increasing Trinity's lead to five. Concordia quickly answered, scoring on three consecutive possessions to take a 25-23 lead. After the Tigers hit a few free throws, Timmons used a jab step to shake off a Tornado defender and nailed a pull-up jumper from the short corner, reclaiming the lead for Trinity. Napoli and Minter then hit back-to-back three-pointers, giving the Tigers a comfortable 33-27 advantage. However, Concordia closed the half with a 6-4 run, and the teams went into the locker room with Trinity holding a slim 37-36 lead.
Â
The first two minutes of the second half mirrored the end of the first, with Trinity briefly extending their lead before Concordia cut it back down. With eight minutes remaining in the quarter, Napoli sank a pair of free throws and followed it up with a layup, signaling that the Tigers were heating up. Over the next four possessions, Trinity's offense found its rhythm. Timmons kicked things off with a jumper, Napoli drained a three-pointer, Greenwood scored a basket, and Napoli added another layup, pushing the Tigers' lead to 52-42.
Â
As the quarter progressed, Trinity continued to build momentum.
Jivana Caceres (Kyle, Texas / Hays) converted a layup through contact, giving the Tigers their largest lead of the game at 15 points. Though the Tornadoes managed a small run, Trinity held a solid 60-49 advantage heading into the final quarter.
Â
In the fourth quarter, the two teams traded baskets almost the entire way. Concordia fought hard to chip away at the Tigers' lead, but Trinity stayed resilient, answering every challenge. With just under a minute remaining, the Tornadoes hit a momentum-building three-pointer to narrow the score to 76-72. Nevertheless, Timmons, Napoli, and Minter combined to go 7-for-8 from the charity stripe in the final moments, sealing the win. Trinity claimed victory with a final score of 83-78.
Coach Speak
"Bruce Almighty is a Jim Carrey gem," exclaimed Head Coach
Cameron Hill. "But Morgan steals the show. Explaining how asking for courage will earn you opportunities to be brave. And asking for patience will earn you opportunities to have your patience tested. Today we asked basketball for a win, and basketball provided us an opportunity to compete. For that we are grateful. ONWARD!!!"
