SAN ANTONIO – The No. 6 Trinity Men's Soccer team grinded out a 1-0 win over the Rhodes College Lynx on a windy night at
Paul McGinlay Field.
Trinity wasted no time seizing control, dictating possession and peppering the goal with six first-half shots. Their pressure paid off in the 19th minute when defender
Alex Baltov (Shreveport, La. / Carson Parish Magnet) latched onto a piercing pass from
Cade Dougan (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Episcopal), who, without hesitation, half-volleyed a superb strike over the goalkeeper from the top of the box. The early breakthrough energized the Tigers, who looked firmly in command until the 28th minute, when defender
Jeremy Siau (Granite Bay, Calif. / Granite Bay) was shown a contentious second yellow card, leaving Trinity to play the final hour with ten men.
Despite the setback, the home side showed composure and discipline in the second half. Rhodes sought to capitalize on the man advantage, but the Tigers' defensive structure, anchored by
Luke Mayfield (Dallas, Texas / JJ Pearce) and freshman goalkeeper
Brandon Gongora (San Antonio, Texas / Madison), never wavered. As the clock ticked down, tensions flared with multiple cautions on both sides, including a late red card for Rhodes that leveled the numbers for the final minutes. But Trinity's back line and midfield pressed on, calmly seeing out the result to earn their fifth straight conference win.
With the victory, the Tigers move to 12-1-0 overall and 5-0-0 in SAA play, extending their unbeaten streak at home and once again demonstrating the grit that defines McGinlay's side this season.
