SAN ANTONIO – The Trinity Men's Swimming and Diving team clutched another win for the season against the University of Texas Permian Basin today with a score of 167-103. Many team members put together some stellar performances which made this win possible.
In the 400 medley relay to begin the meet, UTPB edged out a win against the Trinity boys by less than a second.
Will Walker (Houston, Texas / Westside) nearly made a comeback in the final stretch of the race, but although they didn't secure the win in this event, the Trinity men still got 2nd, 3rd, and 5th in the race.
In the individual races,
Luke Fender (Jackson, Miss. / St. Andrew's Episcopal) and
Theodore Ho (Sugar Land, Texas / Clements) swept the 1000 freestyle with 1st and 2nd place, over 30 seconds ahead of the rest of the field.
Jason Allen (Springfield, Mo. / Springfield) and
Jack Hester (Round Rock, Texas / Cedar Ridge) maintained this dominance in the 200 freestyle and 200 backstroke respectively, each winning their heats. In the 100 breaststroke, Chief Greene-Cockriel secured a win for UTPB, but Trinity's
Daniel Apostol (Billings, Mont. / Central Catholic),
John Key (El Paso, Texas / Franklin), and
Nathan Lumsdaine (Brentwood, Tenn. / Brentwood Academy) got 2nd, 3rd, and 4th. Apostol's time of 57.56 is the 7th best time in Trinity history in this event, an incredibly impressive feat for a dual meet. Similarly, the 200 butterfly consisted of Owen Putnam from UTPB winning, but
Nickolas Rotolo (Houston, Texas / Cairo American College), Walker, and
Ryan O'Leary (Austin, Texas / Austin) obtained 2nd, 3rd, and 4th.
Trace Briones (San Antonio, Texas / Health Careers) followed this heat with an incredible performance in the 50 freestyle, winning with a time of 21.62.
Ash Meckel (Austin, Texas / The Griffin School) and
Max Rolla-Mullis (Ann Arbor, Mich. / Pioneer), the men divers, put up their first official performance of the season at this meet. Although they were uncontested, it is always exciting to see their hard work pay off!
Following diving, Fender and Briones kept up the energy of their previous wins and got 1st and 2nd place in the 100 freestyle. Jack Hester additionally maintained his dominance against UTPB with a win in the 200 backstroke. Unfortunately, Chief Greene-Cockriel won the 200 breaststroke, but Trinity once again responded with resounding 2nd, 3rd, and 4th places finishes by
Theodore Ho,
Nathan Lumsdaine, and
Ryan O'Leary.
Luke Fender continued his streak with a 3rd individual win of the day in the 500 freestyle, beating the rest of the field by over 7 seconds with a time of 4:49.08. Colin Doyle of UTPB followed with a win in the 100 butterfly, but was closely followed by Will Walker,
Nate Perez (Alpharetta, Ga. / Johns Creek), and
Chase Hays (Austin, Texas / Anderson). In the final individual event of the night, Chief Greene-Cockriel won yet again in the 200 individual medley, but not without a fight from Ho, who lost by only around half a second. To finish out the meet, the Tigers competed in a 200 freestyle mixed relay, meaning there were two women and two men on each relay. Trinity ended the meet with yet another win, aided by Apostol and Briones on the A relay.
"The UTPB men are always competitive and today delivered more great races," said Head Coach
Cathleen Pruden. "We made some nice progress from our season opener and are eager to see what next week can bring!"
The Trinity University Swim and Dive team will follow this meet with two different meets next weekend: D3 Shootout at the University of Chicago, and a tri-meet against Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT) and SUNY Geneseo in Geneseo, New York. The Chicago meet will begin on November 7th, and the New York meet will begin on November 8th. Let's cheer on the Tigers as they leave Texas to compete for the first time this season!
