SAN ANTONIO – The #20 Trinity women's swimming & diving team remains undefeated at the weekend competition after snagging wins in seven finals events on day two of the Tiger Invitational. Trinity has scored 972.50 points across the first two days of the meet and are nearly 500 points ahead of the nearest team.
"We had another good day on the women's side," said Head Coach
Cathleen Pruden. "It is great to see the first years continue to announce themselves on the top 10 times list. Lindsay had an awesome "Senior Swim" moment with her 100 breaststroke win. Tomorrow will be a big test of mental toughness, but I think these women will dig deep to finish out the weekend."
Some outstanding performances of the night came from senior captain
Neely Burns (Phoenix, Ariz. / Thunderbird) in the 400 IM where she won the event with a 4:27.67 and achieved her NCAA B-cut, and senior
Lindsay McKinney (Victoria, Texas / Saint Joseph) who won the 100 breaststroke with a life-time best 1:06.61 that also ranks seventh in school history for the event. Joining Burns atop the podium in the 400 IM was senior
Erica Peterson (Lantana, Texas / Guyer), who finished second with a season-best time of 4:43.25.
Emme Penry (Greenwood Village, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) followed McKinney in the 100 breaststroke with a second-place time of 1:07.02, which is her fastest college career time in the event and also ranks ninth in school history.
Trinity opened the evening with a top-10 performance in the 200 Medley relay, as first-year
Ava Easley (Allen, Texas / Lovejoy), sophomore Penry, and juniors
Allison Ortiz (Houston, Texas / Stratford), and
Amy Benson (Newmarket, N.H. / Phillips Exeter Academy) made up the winning A-relay that posted a time of 1:45.73 that lands the team in eighth all-time. Trinity's B-relay of first-years
Kaitlyn Phan (Austin, Texas / Westlake),
Sophia Mandanis (Wichita, Kan. / Andover), and
Kaya Alvegaard-Struble (Kansas City, Mo. / Pembroke Hill) teamed with Burns to snag 3rd place as well.
Ortiz took home the first individual win of the evening in the 100 butterfly with a time of 57.12, defending her title from last year's Tiger Invite in the 100 fly. Easley finished as the runner-up to her teammate with a time of 58.40.
Benson won the 200 free with a time of 1:54.41, followed closely by senior
Audrey Jacobson (Dallas, Texas / School for the Talent and Gifted) and her time of 1:55.92. Both times were season-best performances for the Tiger swimmers.
To close out the night three first-year Tigers went 1-2-3 in the 100 backstroke with three times that are in the top 10 in school history to put an exclamation point on the night. Phan took home 1st place with a time of 56.96 that is good for third all-time at Trinity, while Easley got 2nd place with a time of 57.43 that ties Jacobson for fourth in school history, and Alvegaard-Struble finished 3rd with a time of 57.86 that places her eighth on the Tiger list.
For day 2 of diving on the 3-meter board, first-year
Juliet Hood (Wexford, Pa. / North Allegheny) took home another 1st place win with a total score of 237.05, completing her sweep of the high and low board competitions over the past two days.
