SHERMAN, TX - Trinity University Softball opened the 2025 SCAC season by sweeping Austin College in a doubleheader to open the series.
Â
Trinity (4-2) recorded two wins; A competitive 5-1 win in game 1, and a run rule 8-1 win in game 2.
Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy for Arts Careers and Technology) was incredible, throwing a complete game where she claimed three strikeouts while also going 3-3 from the dish.
Jordan Arce (Thousand Oaks, California / Thousand Oaks) also impressed from both sides of the plate, collecting her first win of the season, throwing 5.1 one-run innings with three strikeouts, and going 2-3 with a double and 3 RBI with the stick.
Mariana Garcia (Goodyear, Arizona / Canyon View) also recorded 3 RBI through her 2-3 performance at the plate.
Â
Game 1: Tigers 5, 'Roos 1
Â
The scoreboard was quiet through the first two innings of game 1, but the Tigers got things kicked off in the top of the third.
Angela Baltzell (Antioch, California / Freedom) started the inning with a double down the left field line. After she made her way to third base, she jumped on the opportunity to score when the Austin College pitcher threw a wild pitch to make it 1-0. Austin College was quick to respond though, and tied the game in the bottom of the third.
Â
Trinity would have to wait until the top of the sixth to score their next runs. Koelewyn and
Ella Whitacre (Roanoke, Texas / Byron Nelson) put the Austin College pitcher in a jam by putting themselves on third and second, and
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods) knew she couldn't leave her teammates hanging, so she brought them home with a 2 RBI single.
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California / Agoura) kept the scoring going through her RBI single that brought in Del Toro and made it 4-1. The Tigers scratched across one more run in the top of the seventh thanks to a Whitacre sacrifice fly before Koelewyn came in to secure the 5-1 victory for Trinity.
Â
Game 2: Tigers 8, 'Roos 1 (5 Inn.)
Â
The Tigers got off to a much quicker start in game 2. Tagawa led the game with an up the middle single, and was quickly brought home when
Leah Gonzalez (San Antonio, Texas / East Central) hit an RBI double. Arce recorded an RBI double of her own to put the Tigers up 2-0 in the top of the first. She would help the Tigers increase their lead to 3-0 in the top of the third with her RBI bunt single. Garcia also hit an RBI single in the inning to further the Tiger lead, and she was followed up by Del Toro's RBI single to make it 5-0.
Â
Trinity also put up a three-spot in the top of the fourth when Arce recorded an RBI off a ground out. Garcia then hit a bases clearing 2 RBI double to push the Tigers to an 8-0 lead. Austin College scored a run in the bottom of the fourth, but it was too little too late and they couldn't prevent the 8-1 five inning run rule.
