SAN ANTONIO – The 10th-ranked Trinity University Women's Tennis Team continued their fine form, extending their unbeaten run to 10, with a tight 4-3 win against the 21st-ranked Bowdoin College Polar Bears.
On a bright and relatively cool morning in San Antonio, the day opened up in spectacular style, with the Tigers winning the doubles point 2-1. First to finish was the on-fire partnership of
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) at #3, who once again cruised to a comfortable 6-3 win. Needing one more win for the doubles point, it was left up to the reliable #1 duo of
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, California / Weil Tennis Academy). They made no mistake against their opponent, smashing them 6-2, winning the doubles point for Trinity, and getting the day started on the front foot. Last to finish was
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Arizona / Desert Mountain) at #2. The usually reliable pairing had a slightly off day and were overpowered by their polar bear opponents, losing 6-2.
After taking a well-earned point from the polar bears in the doubles, the singles action did not disappoint. Hill at #1 once again showed with her performance why she is one of the best DIII tennis players in the country, as she wiped the floor with her opponent, winning 6-1, 6-2. The Tigers' 2-0 lead only lasted a short while as
Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minnesota / Wayzata) at #4, unfortunately, fell short losing in straight sets 6-0, 6-3. Bowdoin was then able to pull the tie back level as the usually consistent Hughes at #3 couldn't redeem herself after the doubles result, and dropped her match 6-3, 6-3 after two closely contested sets. With three singles matches remaining, the tie was in the balance at 2-2, with Trinity needing 2 wins to close out the victory. Trinity at #5 clearly understood the assignment, with her versatile performance racking up another point for the Tigers, as she won 6-2, 7-5. The final two matches of the day were the closest of all and could have gone either way. With Trinity needing 1 win to seal the match, it was left up to the powerful Andrade at #6. After winning the first set 6-3, her opponent fought back to win the second 6-1, but this didn't deter Andrade as she showed resilience to win the third set 6-3, sealing the vital 4th point and a big victory for the Tigers to take into their massive match-up against the University of Chicago on Tuesday. The final match of the day was played out by Kim at #2. Having won the first set in the tiebreak 7-6 (7-4), she lost the following two matches 6-4, 6-0, to give Bowdoin a consolation point to end the day's tennis action.
