SAN ANTONIO – The 13th-ranked Trinity University women's tennis team swept aside both McMurry University (TX) and East Texas Baptist University by identical 7-0 scores on a hot and windy day at the
Butch Newman Tennis Center.
The Tigers (9-1) continued their fine home form, handing the McMurry Warhawks (0-3) their 3rd loss of the season, and then later, East Texas Baptist's (1-2) 2nd loss of the season.
Against the McMurry Warhawks, a lack of players on the Warhawks roster meant only two doubles matches were played with the third being won by default. After starting 1-0 up due to the default win, the first to finish was the #2 partnership of
Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minnesota / Wayzata) and
Brooke Belitz (Scottsdale, Arizona / Notre Dame Prep), who swept their opponents 6-0, claiming the doubles point for the Tigers. Shortly after one 6-0 win, another quickly followed, as the dynamic #1 partnership of
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Ponderosa) and
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, California / Weil Tennis Academy), also won 6-0, making it a clean sweep of doubles matches for the Tigers.
Before the singles matches even started,
Sam Miller (Georgetown, Texas / Georgetown) at #5, and Belitz at #6, were handed default wins once again due to a lack of players available for the Warhawks, putting Trinity 3-0 up, before any singles action had even been played. The Tigers got off to a lightning start, with
Allison Vo (Sugar Land, Texas / Elkins) at #4 finishing first, winning in straight sets 6-0, 6-0 to clinch the victory for the Tigers, while setting the tone for the rest of the morning. In a repeat of Vo's scoreline, next to finish was the commanding Levy at #2, who like Vo, didn't drop a game and won 6-0, 6-0. The penultimate match versus the Warhawks was played by freshman
Katie Schmidt (Prairie Village, Kansas / Shawnee Mission East) at #3, who comfortably won 6-2, 6-0. To cap off an excellent start to the day for the Tigers, the final match of the morning, played by the reliable
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) at #1, who won once again in straight sets 6-0, 6-2.
Later in the afternoon against the ETBU Tigers, Trinity completed another comfortable clean sweep of doubles victories. Finishing first was the formidable #2 partnership of
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Arizona / Desert Mountain) who won 6-0. In a repeat of the morning #1 partnership, the potent Andrade and Levy were next to finish, winning their match 6-2 and clinching the doubles point for the Trinity Tigers. To round off the sweep, the #3 partnership of Miller and Schmidt, proved too much for their opponent, winning 6-1.
Singles began with Nabedrick giving Trinity a 2-0 lead with a 6-1, 6-0 win at #4, then Hill won 6-1, 6-1 at #1 to bring the Trinity Tigers to the brink of the win. Next to finish was the dominant Hughes at #3, who clinched the victory for the Tigers winning 6-0, 6-2. The only slight wobble of the day came at #2, where the skillful Kim won the first set 6-1, but lost the second 6-3, and subsequently was taken to a super tiebreaker, which she comfortably won 1-0 (10-4). The final two matches of the day produced carbon copy results, with Levy at #5, and Andrade at #6, both winning 6-1, 6-0 to cap off a commanding day of tennis for the Tigers.
