SAN ANTONIO – The 29th-ranked Trinity University men's tennis team picked up a pair of victories on Saturday at the
Butch Newman Tennis Center, taking down #17 Pomona-Pitzer Colleges and Colorado College to close out the regular season.
The Tigers (14-10) opened the day with a strong win over Pomona-Pitzer (14-10), handing the Sagehens before rolling past Colorado College (5-13) later in the afternoon.
Against Pomona-Pitzer, Trinity secured the doubles point with a pair of wins at lines three and two.
Jared Perry (Tucson, Ariz. / Catalina Foothills) and
Conor Kaczmarczyk (Aurora, Colo. / Regis Jesuit) set the tone with a 6-2 win at line three, before the Sagehens replied with a 6-3 win over
Rocco Mendez (Las Vegas, Nev. / Odyssey Charter School) and
Kishan Kersten (Plano, Texas / West at top spot.
Aashish Dhanani (Austin, Texas / Westwood) and
Eric Liao (Taipei, Taiwan / Boca Prep) clinched the point with a 6-3 victory of their own at #2, meaning the Tigers took a 1-0 win into singles play.
Liao doubled Trinity's lead with a dominant 6-0, 6-2 win at line five. Pomona then got on the board with a 6-0, 6-3 win over Perry at top spot. The teams traded wins at lines six and two with Kamath taking a 6-3, 6-1 game before Mendez lost 6-3, 6-4. Trinity finished the match strong with a pair of three set wins at lines four and three. Kersten clinched the match for the Tigers with a 4-6, 6-3, 6-1 win at #4 before
Ryan Warren (Keller, Texas / Connections Academy) capped the match with a gritty 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 (7-3) win at line three.
In the afternoon match against Colorado College, the Tigers cruised through doubles, winning all three games. Kersten and
Ethan Ruppanner (Amarillo, Texas / Tascosa) picked up a 6-0 sweep at line three, followed by a 6-3 win at line one from Perry and Kaczmarczyk. Liao and
Connor Whittington (Lake Oswego, Ore. / Lake Oswego) rounded out doubles action with a 6-4 win at line two.
Trinity continued to roll in singles as Kamath opened with a 6-1, 6-4 win at line three, and Perry followed with a 6-2, 7-6 (7-2) win at the top line.
Ethan Flores (Houston, Texas / Clear Lake) gave the Tigers the clincher at line six, battling for a 6-3, 7-6 (7-3) win. Liao edged out a second-set tiebreaker to win 6-4, 7-6 (7-5) at line two, and Whittington secured a three-set win at line five, 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4. Dhanani closed the match with a tiebreak win on line four, rallying 6-4, 6-7 (5-7), 10-7.
