CLAREMONT, Calif. –The No. 12 Trinity University Women's Tennis team delivered a commanding performance on Saturday afternoon, taking down No. 17 Whitman 4-0 to punch its ticket to the NCAA Tournament Round of 16.
The Tigers came out with fire in doubles, setting the tone early.
Ellie Hughes (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) and
Lauren Tin (Austin, Texas / Vandegrift) struck first at line three with a confident 6-2 win. Moments later,
Ruth Hill (Abilene, Texas / Abilene) and
Olivia Kim (Phoenix, Arizona / Desert Mountain) sealed the doubles point with a 6-3 victory at line two.
Trinity Levy (Camarillo, California / Weil Tennis Academy) and
Rosabella Andrade (Southlake, Texas / Carroll) were locked in a tight 3-3 battle at line one when play was stopped.
Singles play was all Trinity. Levy wasted no time at line five, rolling through her match 6-0, 6-0 to double the Tiger lead.
Lucy Nabedrick (Plymouth, Minnesota / Wayzata) followed with an equally dominant 6-1, 6-1 win at line three, keeping the momentum squarely in Trinity's hands. The clinching point came from Kim at line four, who stepped up in a tight match and came out on top 6-3, 6-4.
Even the unfinished matches were swinging Trinity's way. Hill was up 6-4, 4-4 at line one. Hughes had taken the first set 6–2 before falling in the second at line two, while Andrade led 6-3, 4-3 at line six.
With the win, the Tigers advance to face No. 3 Pomona-Pitzer in the NCAA Round of 16. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. on Sunday, May 11, at Pomona-Pitzer.
