AUSTIN, Texas - Trinity University Softball split their games today with a 4-5 loss against St. Thomas, followed by a strong comeback 12-6 win against Concordia.
Their win this afternoon set off some major records.
Carsyn Lee (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound) nabbed her 18th double of the season today, setting a new single-season record. Today's win also marked victory 32 for Tiger Softball, setting off yet another single-season record.
In Trinity's doubleheader, Lee stood out as the most consistent offensive threat. Across the two games, Lee went 4-for-6 with three RBIs, including a key RBI double against Concordia and a 3-for-3 performance in that 12-6 win.
Hannah Boudreaux (Pearland, Texas / Shadow Creek) also delivered, going 4-for-7 with two RBIs and three runs scored, including the go-ahead RBI double in the 7th inning of the loss to St. Thomas.
Sydney Watson (San Antonio, Texas / San Antonio Christian) contributed three RBIs on the day, highlighted by a two-run double in Trinity's 3-run fourth inning against St. Thomas. A top stat from the Concordia win: Trinity scored 9 of its 12 runs in the first two innings, fueled by a 5-RBI stretch from Lee, Boudreaux, and
Hayden Del Toro (Cypress, Texas / Cy Woods)
Megan Kriechbaum (Cedar Hills, Utah / Pleasant Grove) was dominant in relief against Concordia, earning the save with five innings of work. She allowed just one run on four hits while striking out eight and walking one.
Josephine Koelewyn (Reno, Nevada / Academy of Arts Careers and Technology) also played a pivotal role, notching her 16th win of the season in the same game by throwing 1.1 innings of relief. Earlier in the day, Koelewyn pitched a complete game in the loss to St. Thomas, allowing five runs (four earned) over 6.2 innings with 107 pitches.
Game 1 vs. St. Thomas – Tigers 4, Celts 5
It was a slow start for the Tigers as they ended the third inning down 2-0. This did not stop
Samantha Tagawa (Agoura Hills, California/ Agoura) from giving the Celts a run for their money, doubling to right center field on an RBI, pushing
Abigail Miller (Winnetka, California/ El Camino Real) home. Following her lead, Watson doubled to right center on a double RBI so Del Toro and Tagawa could put up two more runs, bringing it to 3-2.
In the seventh inning, the Tigers made one last push.
Ella Whitacre (Roanoke, Texas Byron Nelson) led off with an empathic triple to left center, giving Trinity some life. Boudreaux followed, doubling to right center, scoring Whitacre. Unfortunately, it was not enough to subdue St. Thomas, and they lost game one in a close score of 4-5.
Game 2 vs. Concordia – Tigers 12, Tornados 6
After their loss earlier this morning, the Tigers came back with vengeance after a strong start in game two.
Lee led the push in the bottom of the first inning, after doubling to center field, sending Whitacre home for the first run of the night. Immediately after, Boudreaux showed off the wheels, scoring off a wild pitch. To wrap up the inning,
Mariana Garcia (Goodyear, Arizona / Canyon View) doubled to right field, scoring Lee and giving TU a 3-2 lead.
After a homerun from Concordia in the top of the second inning the Tigers found themselves down 5-3 and in need of a comeback to stay in the tournament. Boudreaux led the charge, singling up the middle, plating one run. Immediately after, Lee tied the ballgame with a single to right field. To wrap up the inning Boudreaux, Lee, and Garcia all scored, regaining Trinity the lead and then some at 9-5.
In the sixth inning, the Tigers cemented their win with runs from Lee,
Kayci Menchaca (Falfurrias, Texas / Falfurrias), and Del Toro, making the final score 12-6.
