San Antonio – After an exceptional opening weekend for the Tigers, where they earned their first ranked win of the season over the Claremont Stags. The Trinity men's soccer team came out firing and delivered a dominant 6-0 victory over the Schreiner University Mountaineers on a hot evening at home in San Antonio.
After last year's decisive 5-0 victory over the Mountaineers, the Tigers were expecting them to bring their A-game. However, like previous years, Trinity asserted its superiority from the off. Despite a few early saves from Schreiner's goalkeeper, Trinity's relentless attack broke through quickly and never let up. This win highlighted Trinity's free-flowing attacking football, defensive stability, as well as their sheer strength in attacking depth, as tonight's game featured six different goal scorers.
The Rundown
From the opening whistle, it was clear to see how the game would go with the Mountaineers put on the back foot from the very off. It only took until the eighth minute of the game when the ball found itself at the feet of
Luke Chandler (Glasgow, Scotland / Balfron) in the box, who stayed calm and set it off for the freshman
Thomas Kay (Stanstead Mountfitchet, England / Bishop's Stortford), who placed the ball into the roof of the net from just outside the box, giving him his first collegiate goal on his first ever start.
The Tigers didn't have to wait long for the second goal, as just eight minutes later,
Max Salinas (Austin, Texas / Austin) let a long throw from
Jeremy Siau (Granite Bay, California / Granite Bay) run across his body as he dropped a shoulder on his opponent and slotted the ball home with his weak foot from six yards out. The scoring didn't stop before the half as
Ethan Cowdrey (Crawley, England / Ardingly College) lobbed the ball into the path of an onrushing
Aiden Perales (Corpus Christi, Texas / Veterans Memorial), who took one touch and lasered the ball across the keeper and into the bottom right-hand corner from the left-hand side of the box, giving Trinity a 3-0 lead heading into the break.
Halftime brought wholesale changes for the Tigers as the team started to look towards Sunday's fixture against the Kalamazoo Hornets. This by no means meant the Tigers let up in any fashion as four minutes into the second half,
Karlo Barbour (Montreal, Canada / Montverde Academy) played the ball into the feet of
Joey Perryman (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound), who took one touch inside and, without looking, whipped a delicious shot into the far right corner, creeping just inside of the post, from the top left-hand side of the box. Trinity's fifth goal of the evening was a highlight of the night, as after a nice bit of combination play on the right flank, Kay picked out
Will Robinson (Kerrville, Texas / Tivy) inside the six-yard box, who produced an effortless striker's finish, guiding the ball home with his right foot. This gave Robinson his first collegiate goal against his hometown team. To round off an excellent attacking display from the Tigers, with nine minutes remaining,
Samuel Theiss (Boerne, Texas / Boerne) received the ball from
Jason Sukow (Jacksonville Beach, Florida / Reagan), drove into the penalty area, shimmied past four opposing players, and cheekily snuck the ball between the keeper's legs to give Trinity their sixth goal of the evening and Theiss' second goal in two games. The Tigers outshot the Mountaineers 29-2 on the night, including a 10-0 margin in the first half alone, a stat line that perfectly reflects their dominance throughout the evening.
