SAN ANTONIO – The 11th-ranked Trinity men's soccer team extended its perfect run to start the season with a commanding 3-0 victory over the Kalamazoo College (MI) Hornets on a muggy evening at
Paul McGinlay Field.
With two straight wins already under their belts, the Tigers came into the match brimming with confidence, and their performance showed it. Trinity's relentless pressure and attacking depth once again proved too much for their opponents, while the defense stood tall to record another clean sheet, leaving the Hornets without a single shot on target across the ninety minutes.
The Rundown
The Tigers dictated the tempo from the very start, keeping Kalamazoo pinned back in their own half and firing off chances from all over the pitch. Despite several close calls before halftime, it wasn't until after the break that Trinity's breakthrough arrived.
In the 53rd minute,
Kassen Dilworth (Schertz, Texas / Clemens) threw a scintillating long throw down the right hand side for the onrushing
Joey Perryman (Flower Mound, Texas / Flower Mound), who shielded the ball well, took one touch inside towards the byline and lasered the ball across the six yard box for
Adam Knutson (Dripping Springs, Texas / Dripping Springs) to cooly tap home, giving the Tigers a 1-0 lead and himself a second goal of the season.
Just under twenty minutes later,
Cade Dougan (Austin, Texas / St. Stephen's Espiscopal) clipped a perfectly weighted ball, in behind and into the path of
Samuel Theiss (Boerne, Texas / Boerne), who timed his run to perfection, took one look up, saw the keeper in no-mans-land and without hesitation lobbed the ball over the stranded keeper and into the back of the net. This gave the Tigers the two-goal safety net, extended Theiss' scoring streak to three games in a row, and means he's scored in every game so far this year.
However, Theiss wasn't finished just yet. In the 86th minute, Knutson received the ball on the left-hand side, drove into the Hornets' penalty area, jinked past one player, turned another one inside-out, reached the end line, and calmly chipped the ball between two players onto the head of Theiss, who simply had to direct the ball into the net from the six-yard line. This put the Tigers 3-0 up and firmly out of the reach of the Hornets.
Trinity finished with a 19-6 shot advantage, including nine on target, compared to zero for Kalamazoo. The Hornets' goalkeeper kept the scoreline from growing with six saves, while the Tigers' back line ensured the visitors never had a clear look at goal.
This victory keeps the Tigers unbeaten at 3-0-0, with their attack firing on all cylinders and their defense leaving this weekend unbeaten. With Knutson finding his scoring touch and Theiss leading the line with confidence, the Tigers showed once again why they are one of the most dangerous sides in Division III.
